But there is no Elsie Godwin about who fits. And no Mr Godwin who married an Elsie.

I think you're right though! A certificate is needed.

I think I need to research back into the Smallwooods. Maybe finding the family in 1891, before Ada was born and when her father was still alive may throw some light on it.

Well just a thought but if he married in 1918 to Ada he didnt have any children with her as theres no Davenport/Smallwood children listed .

he didnt start to have children till c 1923 a gap of 5 years , thengoes on to has a little family. I am more inclined that he separated then later got together with Elsie

snowyw Report 22 Apr 2012 22:52

What a pity there are no more census's after 1911, so we can check up on the family. :-D

The daughter did say her mother was Elsie Ada - that is a bit of a coincidence.

I've had a thought now. If he did separate and masquaraded as being married to Elsie Godwin - is there a death for an Elsie Davenport?

You really need to get a birth cert,

The first few children are also registered under the surname Burton as well as Davenport. There are also 3 Burton/Godwin children born before this in Stoke T.

It seems to imply Ms Godwin was married to a Burton and wasn't divorced, but I don''t see a marriage. That or the husband went under 2 surnames.

I think you may have it, but I am a little confused.
Do you think that the father wasn't William Norman??
But I will have to come back to this, this afternoon when I get in from work.
Thanks for your help.

As Rose noted, there are 3 Burton/Godwin kids 1915q3-1921q3, then there are 2 rego'ed as both Burton & Davenport with mum's MS=Godwin 1923q3-1926q2. All 5 were rego'ed in Stoke RD. Finally there are 3 Davenport/Godwin daurs rego'ed in the Sandbach subdistrict of Congleton RD 1928q4-1934q2.

I think Rose is mostly right - Miss Godwin "married" Mr Burton, although I see no marr rego, and that marr ended in 1921-2, and in 1922-3, she took up with Wm Norman, whose own marr had ended too. This is pretty speculative - you need a b.cert of one of the kids to get her forename for sure.

Oh my goodness! I have it!
What I now cannot understand is how two children have been registered twice. - I'm going to check the actual entry on the page and see whether there is an extra handwritten entry in the name of Davenport - which might suggest a correction at a later date.

Well I've just checked it out and there is no such handwitten note for a change of entry. I can only assume that both parents registered these two childen separately - hence two registrations.

So who is the father? Burton or Davenport???

Potty

Potty Report 23 Apr 2012 16:44

The births haven't been registered twice - they have been indexed twice because the parents weren't married but the father was present at the registration and agreed to his name being put on the registration as the father.

Whichever of the references you used to order the cert would result in the same cert being supplied.

You said in an earlier post that one of the daughters is still alive. Does she not have her birth cert for you to check?

Births Sep 1923

Burton Lily Godwin Stoke T. 6b 417
Davenport Lily Godwin Stoke T. 6b 417

Same with a brother in 1926

That looks like two fathers to me???

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 23 Apr 2012 17:05

rather than 2 fathers it could be:-

mother Burton

father Davenport

both present at registration so both names could be used

THANKS EVERYONE!!

It's probably not Elsie Ada because there's no death for a Davenport in that name, unless she died as a Burton.

I am not totally convinced it is Elsie Ada either. The daughter says that was her name but..... :-S
I think she stayed in the Stoke area - I will have to check on that.

A birth certificate is the only way of confirming this, I know.

In think you might need 2 certs. One to confirm who Elizabeth's father is and another from the earlier Burton children to see those details. Update when you can.
