| The Holcomb/Holkem/Holcombe Family | Sylvia | 14/07/2010 18:10:20 | 0 | |
| I have had many twists and turns with my Holkem name. It all started with my Mother who was born Ellen Holkem but married under the name of Holcombe ( name changed between 1911 and 1914) wherby everybod y is now called Holcombe. However, since tracing my family through Genes Reunited I have since learnt from the various people who have contacted me that my family seems to have been called Holcomb. Hence three different types of spelling whlch as you can appreciate has really been taxing at times. However, I have thoroughly enjoyed finding out about these differences and through all the help I have received from other members I have received amazing information about my Holcomb family as they have been related to me in some way and have informed me about something that I had no knowledge of. even though i received informatin some three years ago but did not think it had anything to do with me. Well I was wrong because last year another member contacted me and once again was distantly related by marriage. Well what I found out was that my Gt, Gt,Gt, Gandfather and Mother lived in Tellisford in Somerset which I already knew. What I did not know was that my Grand Mother and her son James work for the Savil Kent family at lRoad Hill House where the 3 year old child was murdered.by his step sister Constance and was found in the outside privvy belonging to the servants with his throat cut and stabbed through the heart.. The murder took place in1860. A book as written about the Murder at Road Hill House which I purchased. It appearsThe reason being is that My Gt,Gt,Gt, Grandmother Mary Holcomb and her son James Holcomb(the Gardener,Coachman) both worked at Road Hill House.at the time of the murder... Mary was a Charwomen who was given the job of laying out and washing the boys body and both of them are named in the book which is something I had not expected to find. So you can imagin my surprise! So thanks to Genes reunited I can now dine oout on this litle story as my claim to fame. Hope you find this of interest.. | ||||

| my great great uncle | Karen | 13/07/2010 22:11:08 | 0 | |
| We are all here cos we love or are addicted or have other personal reasons for searching our family tree ! My 14 year old daughter is currently on a school trip to Belgium, Ypres. Today after I had provided her with all the details, she visited the grave of my gt gt uncle who died in 1918 in the great war aged just 18...................she layed down a poppy and signed the book. Doesn`t that make us "mad" lot seem the most least mad of all. Thats what this is all about.................although a very sad day, today would noy have happened if I had never started this search ! RIP uncle Robert Proctor | ||||
| Father and Daughter to meet after 64 years thanks | seeking Hilary | 12/07/2010 07:11:55 | 0 | |
| A massive thanks to everyone who has assisted in our search. After many years searching I am excited to say that we have finally found my grandfather and for the first time ever my 64 year old mother has spoken to her father (and many extended family she never knew she had!) We have so much information taken from records found through GR and other search sites but would never have been able to find living relatives if it were not for the 'tree match' feature and a half hearted 'i don't suppose your rellies are connected to mine' type email ! so if anyone else is using this site (as we did) to try and find living relatives I say don't give up, you never know when that missing piece will fall into place! | ||||

| Missing relatives found via Genes | Juanita | 06/07/2010 16:45:06 | 0 | |
| A friend thought her father an only child. When he died she found a letter saying there was a mystery in the family and that he had changed his surname. With the help of Genes Reunited we tracked down some of her fathers brothers and had a reunion in London with the daughter of one of them. She was a lovely person and my friend now has cousin she never knew she had. | ||||
| Palmer Family Reunion 3rd July 2010 | ♥Deetortrainingnewfys♥ | 06/07/2010 14:11:41 | 0 | |
| Planned in 2 weeks with some ideas from GR members...see my thread on the Chat board. 45 attended...only 1 person couldn't make it on the day. Well the reunion came...and went...far too quickly. It was lovely, everyone enjoyed meeting up after so many years. New generations came too and they loved looking at the tree on my wall and all the old photos I had attached to it. They all had a good look through our family tree file, which I had compiled in event date order, including BMDs, census, and photos. Some of my cousins didn't even know the names of our grandparents let alone gt grandparents and gt gt grandparents. They found it fascinating. It was a bit hectic, as fast as the food was disapearing from the table, I was topping it up with more as items were being brought in with people as they arrived, and they all enjoyed the food...given that there were only scraps to clear away. I gave all my cousins and their children a print out of their own individual tree for 4 generations which they didn't expect. They thought it was a great idea and loved them. And I found a treasure...my cousin had a photograph of my dad when he was six years old. All be that it was a "mourning" photograph. My grandmother died when he was just 6, his brothers 8 and 10 years and his sister 12 who then had to look after them all. The photograph has all the children and my grandfather in it, in the mourning suits. I haven't seen it yet, as she felt it too precious to bring to such a gathering, but I have arranged to meet up with her and go through all the family photos which my aunt had kept and is now safe in my cousins keep....lots of scanning to get on with. She even has burial receipts with the plot numbers of family graves, so we are going off to look for them. I can't wait, she is really keen to do it with me and see what we can find together...something I have missed when my sister passed away last year, as she always went researching with me. Sadly....or not....I am off on holiday on thursday for a week so have had to put our meeting off until I come back....something to look forward to, but I am looking forward to my holiday right now. I have posted this update onto the chat boards to thank the people who gave me some ideas in the planning stages....so I apologise if you see this twice! If you have been thinking about organising one...do it....time is precious and goes so quickly...until it is too late. Regards Dee | ||||

| Discovering Halletts in Australia. | Michael | 29/06/2010 23:29:19 | 0 | |
| I want to thank especially Cherilyn and Sue, who did a great deal of research for me and actually found out a great deal about my own ancestry. I posted a simple request and as a consequence learned a tremendous amount about my great grandfather and his family in Australia, their lives, marriages, children and deaths. A whole history revealed by two very keen researchers. Thank you both very much. Many family myths exposed, and vague memories revived and clarified. Without Genesreunited this could have been impossible. I will be forever grateful. | ||||
