George, aka Cyril (?) born 1899 Bolsover middle child of 3 to Elizabeth Florence nee Cuttell and George Howis, a tailor, who listed his birthplace as Winsick and Derby. They had Dorothy (Mrs Carrot in 1898) and Eliza May (1901-1988) also. George, apparently nicknamed Cyril to distinguish himself from his father, supposedly graduated from university with a degree in science - believed to be chemistry. Family legend states he worked as a chemist for something similar to ICI up Doncaster/Manchester/Yorks area. A cousin said that his wife was 'Bella' (name or nickname?) and that their son was 'Sandy' - again, possibly a nickname to distinguish him from father? In 1939 Sandy was roughly about 9-12 years of age. Family legend states that 'Cyril' was killed in a train crash near london and that he may have done classified scientific work for the British Government during WW2. Any leads appreciated - his parents both died in Bolsover in 1945. |
