No I haven't checked there. I live in Canada, how would I check with them?

Definitely a mystery.

Thanks.

Oooh

back to the drawing board...........

Just a thought...

Have you checked with the local Liverpool or W.Derby offices in case the birth WAS registered, but for some reason didn't make it onto the GRO master copy?

Flip Report 12 Mar 2017 08:49

The parents for that birth married in 1860 - James Pearson Leche & Ellen Clarke so can't be the right one.

Good find Gwyn !!, BUT the mother's maiden name for the above does not match:

LECHE, JAMES PEARSON *CLARKE* Order
GRO Reference: 1865 M Quarter in LIVERPOOL Volume 08B Page 109

The chances are that your James was born in 1865,

Been looking for this birth for years, still haven't found it. I've just found a baptism on lan-opc.org.uk for James' baptism. Baptism is shown as 6 Aug 1865 at St, Aidan's in Kirkdale, parents Joseph and Martha. Why oh why can't I find his birth on findmypast.

Thanks for the replies. You might be right about him being born in 1865 as his age on the death certificate is given as 76 but I can't find a birth in 1865 either. I do have him in the censuses and have his marriage and death certificates but that birth definitely eludes me.

Thanks
Yvonne

the parish record image of the 1867 baptism is on ancestry

the marriage to Maria was the transcript from lan-opc but the image is also on ancestry

the image for marriage of his parents is also on ancestry

Your tree on ancestry has a death date of 16 April 1941 - the GRO of which fits with him being born 1865 - no dob on death certificate?

Doesn't help you find James' birth but this is Martha in 1861

Name: Martha Leach
Age: 30

Gender: Female
Where born: Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Civil parish: Liverpool
Ecclesiastical parish: St Aidan

She is a seaman's wife, which fits with everything about Joseph including his marriage. So think you can definitely discount the 1867 birth/baptism as (a) Joseph is a baker as Ann says and (b) the mother is Mary Jane not Martha.

ONLY Mary Hannah seems to be registered in West Derby - the rest are Liverpool. So IF James was registered I reckon you should be looking at Liverpool not West Derby??

Yvonne Report 9 Dec 2012 01:54

I thought about him not being registered but since he had six siblings who all were registered, it seems unlikely that he wouldn't be. It's just such a mystery.

I agree with you Ann, that a career change from baker to stevedore is very unlikely. How did you know he was a baker, I couldn't find him.

Thanks
Yvonne

lancashireAnn Report 8 Dec 2012 23:46

the father of the James Leach born July 1867 was a baker so probably not your James.

It seems an unlikely career change from baker to stevedore

just as a bit more background

Marriage: 25 Dec 1886 St Martin in the Fields, Vauxhall, Lancashire, England
James Leach - 21 Engine Driver Bachelor of Latimer St
Maria Muirhead - 19 Spinster of Latimer St
Groom's Father: Joseph Leach, Stevedore
Bride's Father: Thomas Muirhead, Engine Driver
Witness: William Muirhead; Margaret Isherwood
Married by Banns by: William Chaplin Incumbent
Register: Marriages 1860 - 1890, Page 204, Entry 408
Source: LDS Film 1656206

which seems to indicate he was born in 1865

It's been a long time I know, but I'm still trying to find the birth of James Leach. I sent for the birth certificate for James Leech, W. Derby 8b/353 but it's not the right one. I've searched findmypast and can't find anything but I looked on familysearch and found the following: James Leach, son of Joseph & Mary Jane, born 7 Jul 1867 and baptised 18 Aug 1867 at St. Nicholas' Church, Liverpool. The parents of my James are Joseph Leach and Martha Ireland. Do you think the familysearch reference could be my James, even though the mother is given as Mary Jane. I've looked on findmypast but can't find the 1867 birth. I have the births of his siblings but not him.

Thanks June. I'll send off for the birth cert. It's a different spelling but that happend a lot in those days. The other info you give is correct and I can find him in the 1871 and 1891 census but I couldn't for the life of me find his birth. Hopefully the one you've found is right. Thanks again.

Sorry June, I thought I'd replied to this but I don't see the reply posted. James had a brother John so I don't think this birth is his. The area is correct as they were all born around the W. Derby area.
Thanks.
