Hi Alison

Don't know whether you have sorted this out yet as it was some time ago but I'll go ahead anyway.

Had a check through my Murray's of Peterhead database and there is only 1 John Murray with a registered baptism about that time, no birth but no surprise as they were not always registered:

John Murray, seaman in Peterhead a son, John bap. 13 Nov 1836 before William Saunders and William Simpson.

There is no death registered in Peterhead for a John Murray (birth 1836 ish) 10 years either side of 1880, but there are 2 registered in the county of Aberdeenshire between 1880 & 1890 - John Murray d.1881 age 44, St Nicholas, Aberdeen City and John Murray d.1885 age 50, Cluny, Aberdeenshire.

Marriage of John Murray to a Jean (Joan) Duthie on the %th July 1858, that gives John's year of birth as 1836, Parents of the spouse - John Duthie and ???? Taylor.

Details above are from the Scotland's peoples site where you'll also be able to get the certificate.

Hope this is of some use.

Regards Colin Murray

Hello Aileen
thanks for the reply to my query re. John Murray. His wife was Joan Murray (nee Duthie) so the death cert. you have is not for him, but thank you anyway.

Hiya
have found a death certificate for a John Murray died
12/12/1881 Aberdeen married to (1) Elizabeth Marr (2) Jane McPherson. Occupation given as Shore Labourer. If you could check details of your husband's grandparent and see if mother's name is either of these then I will know if we are looking at the right man.

I have an old Discharge Certificate dated 4th June 1880 for a John Murray who was my husband's great grandfather. It states he was signed on as mate on the merchant ship Hindostan (office no. 45208) on 6th. April 1880 and discharged
4th June 1880.His age is given as 43 and his place of birth Peterhead Aberdeenshire. The ship was registered in Aberdeen.I believe he died shortly afterwards but have no details of his birth marriage or death. Can anyone help with this as I have been unable to get any further with that part of the family tree. Any info. would be gratefully received. Thanks Alison.
