Hi Jim

Robert James Tostevin married at the St Helier Registry Office between 1906 and 1910. There is a Florence Alice de la Mare on the same page. If you want more information about the marriage I can probably go and look at the certificate sometime next week.

Florence's baptism is on line and gives her parents as William John de la Mare, a shipwright and Mary Ann Pallot, date of birth 13/8/1882

There's quite a bit of information about this couple on the Jersey Heritage site.

All the best

Pam

Hi Jim
Don't know what made me look at this thread tonight as it's slipped so far down the board nobody much knows it's here anymore.

I'll have a look for that marriage for you sometime in the week.

Gina
I wouldn't know where to start looking for a photo and I doubt if there is any information about the cafe/restaurant. I can't imagine that it is a listed building or anything of importance.
I don't think I'll be able to help you with this one - sorry.

Hi again Pam

Is it possible to find more details on these businesses and maybe a photo? Is there any clues as to what happened to the restaurant after Ellen died in 1973. I have tried searching the net but keep drawing a blank. Apart from the indian resaurant that is.

Many thanks for that info Pam. Perhaps the 'hotel' in question was actually the cafe/restaurant.

thanks again

Hi Gina
Just back from a quick trip to the Archive.
George William bought the property in 1963 and in 1964 it was the Belmont Café, from 1965 until 1973 (when Ellen died) it went upmarket and became the Restorante Belmonte.
There is no indication that it was ever a hotel or guest house and to be honest it's not really in the right part of town for that.

Hello Gina
I think there is a system in place at the Archive that can trace house history - I've never used it but I can see if I can find someone to give me a quick tutorial :)
The other possibility may be to look in the Almanac and Rate lists

Hi Pam

Its me again.
My George and Ellen Salmon lived at 76 Bath Street, St Helier. According to Google this address is now an Indian restaurant. Is there any way of finding out what it was before this. There has been talk of my Salmons owning a hotel???
Any help would be appreciated once again

regards

Gina

Pam

Thanks for trying. Problem I have is that he moved to Kent before the children were born I think so I can't pinpoint him. His wife was a Mary but she was Irish and I don't know if they married in Jersey or England. Perhaps I'll look for a marriage.

Thanks again

Hello Louise

I re-checked the marriage entry and they did marry at St Thomas's Church, Val Plaisant, St Helier. The church is still the main Catholic church in the island.
Witnesses were both his family.

Marcel's birth is registered in St Helier between Sept 1910 and July 1912, probably nearer July 1912 as it's on page 99, I can check the full entry if you want me to do any digging into his background.

Regards

Pam

Hello Grahame

Your only hope is if he was baptized, even then it could be in any of the 12 parishes, and Picot is a very common name over here.
Have you tried to pinpoint him in any of the Jersey censuses?
Does this one look likely?

Could you please try to find a record of the birth of John Picot b1822 on Jersey. I'm afraid I don't know any more.
