Hi Jim,
I'm looking at the same thing as you .... I think Fiddy is his mother's maiden name. His son Robert Townsend took his mother's maiden name too; he is my direct line through his son Henry John, who is my gr-gr-grandfather.
I have his mother's name given as Sophia, but no father's name is recorded. His baptismal date is given as 16 Feb 1817, Felthorpe, Norfolk.
I'd love to hear from you and pool info!

Hi Jim,

We have Henry Mays b. 1804 in Thornham Norfolk, married to Elizabeth N/K B. 1804 Snettisham Norfolk. They had 9 children: James 1825 Hannah b. 1829, Mary Ann, 1830, Jane b. 1834, Ann b. 1836, Henry b. 1838, William b. 1841, John b. 1845 and Edward b. 1849 - all at Thornham. Cenus records show that Elizabeth's maiden name was possibly Burton. (Poor Hannah ended up in Docking Workhouse!) William (my husband's great grandfather) and his wife Emma Griffin (b. 1836 Wisbech) had a son, James William, b. 1875 Wisbech and then married Annie Maria Clarke, who were my late father-in-law's parents.

There seem to me Mays' in all areas of the country and we have struggled to link all of the relevant folks, but most of ours seem to be around the Wisbech and King's Lynn areas. Hope this might help? Best wishes, Jayne Mays

I am working to trace back further than Edmund Fiddy MAYS, father of John, father of William Francis, father of Francis Charles who was my father.

I believe that Edmund was born in Norfolk about 1817.
