Dear all,
below area family who are mentioned in 1861 and 1871 ,,, The mother's name of Roberta, is actually Rebecca ... the birth certificate of her son James Wood(s) in 1858 in Middlesbrough confirmed this, and her death in Stockton in 1866 also confirmed. However, although I do not know what happened to Robert jnr, James or Olna, I am desperate to find out what became of Robert Woods snr (born c. 1830 in Ireland), and Mary Ann Woods (born. 1855 in Stockton).
My ancestor was John Woods who was born 1854 in Ireland, although later censuses reveal different places of birth including Stockton, Middlesbrough and Sunderland ... don't ask me why he lied about his place or birth. Or if he even knew; he was sentenced to prison in 1895 for assaulting his wife. The newspaper reports are somewhat difficult to read.
So I am trying to see what became of his family and if they had any scrapes with the law like he did.
1861 England Census about John Wood Name: John Wood Age: 8 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1853 Relation: Son Father's Name: Robert Mother's Name: Roberta Gender: Male Where born: Ireland

Can anyone see the family in later censuses? Any deaths? Marriages? I hope this request is not too vauge but I have been looking and I thought I would ask to see if anyone else can find another route to help me out.
Cheers,
Peter

I don't know that these girls are connected - they're not together with the boys. NB Page is torn - guess is [Ma]rgaret + [Sa]rah - Folio: 75; Page: 23]

Peter. I remember reading about an Irish family who incidently were living in Middlesbrough but born in Ireland lying about their place of birth on the census. It was proved to a member they were Irish. The reason for lying was because poor people were afraid of being sent back.
As for the name Olna. Have you checked the census image as I havnt heard that name before and cant find it bmds. Is Olna male or female. Could it be Owen?

Margaret, I've just checked the image (Source Citation: Class: RG9; Piece: 3654; Folio: 66; Page: 42; GSU roll: 543167.) and I think it says Olna. He's described as "Son" and his age appears in the male column - this enumerator has also added the prefix M to all male ages, including Olna's. The O in Olna looks like the O in Ormesby, I suppose the n might be a v, but that hardly decreases its weirdness, notwithstanding Thomas Alva Edison of inventing fame. (I have seen Alvah used occassionally as a surname, but it's a Banffshire parish name, and it was used in Banff/Aberdeen, so that's not quite the same.)

Well this is fabulous - I have emailed Tyne and Wear Archives to see if they can help with the children in the workhouse. So sad ...
John Woods - the first documentation I have of him is his 1877 marriage to his wife in Middlesbrough. His father is Robert Woods, a labourer. In 1881 he is in West Hartlepool and his place of birth is Stockton-on-Tees, in 1891 he is back in Middlesbrough where his place of birth is Sunderland and in 1895 he was sentenced to prison for battering his wife. Then in 1901 he is in Middlesbrough with his youngest daughter living as lodgers in his oldest married daughter's house. His 'ex' - wife and the rest of the family are a few streets away, she working as a laundress. To confuse matters, John's wife was born in County Durham (I have the birth certificate) to Irish immigrants and each census states she was born in Durham, although this 1901 states Ireland. Likewise John in the 1901 states Middlesbrough.
So with this in mind another researcher found the 1861 census and the 1871 which I attached. Seen as this family lived in Middlesbrough, Stockton and Sunderland, and they had a son John born at the time expected with a father named Robert who was a labourer, fitted everything together.
As for Olna, I too thought Owen but I saw the origional census return too! Any other ideas; I am really excited to find out more now! What became of this family after their breakdown? So sad to think this is what became of people not that long ago ... one final part of the mystery ...
I can't find John Woods' death. He is so elusive. On his children's BMD certs he is listed as been alive and then deceased and so forth. If he flitted off one night then perhaps we'll never find out!
Thank you, and I look forward to what else we can find out!

Interesting reading. getting back to Olna . There is a birth for Owen in mar qt 1860. The census are not the originals but are copied from original papers by the enumerator into a book so mistakes could be made if the writing was obscure . I guess you like the rest of us is waiting patiently for the 1911 census. I have a relative missing in 1901. They are in Middlesbrough too. The census page is missing for one side of the street

Hi Margaret,
Which part of Middlesbrough your family from - I have family in Middlesbrough in 1901 and they are missing from the census. I don't know their exact address in 1901 and it is a common name. Perhaps they were neighbours ... what street is missing?

Peter I knew a Pennock in Middlesbrough in the 1960s but I cant remember his first name.Small world as they say. I havnt got Ancestry anymore so cant check for your Pennocks. Perhaps they were neighbours of my grandmother.
As a child she lived directly behind the house I was born in in Duncombe St. Of course I didnt know that till I started looking for her on the census Just as a bit of interest. The missing Darby family Philip with baby Isabella. Isabella or Belle as she was known became a music hall artiste and married Jimmy James. I have their marriage cert in Stockton in 1922
Just amending the Pennock I knew was spelt Pennick and his name was Victor
