Well I've had to read the whole thread again to keep up! Look how far down the road you've come since that Ritchie/Marsland marriage was identified!
Now re John Holland - had a browse around as there are quite a few sites to do with seafaring but couldn't find any reference to the 'Nicholas Wood' . (Presumably it was named after someone). You might try Documentsonline from The National Archives & do a search on John Holland or just Holland - there are some seamans registers there and you can give a date range. So you were right about George Holland being John's brother in the 1841 census - I had forgotten that where people were over 15 then their ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years in that census so he must have given his age as 29?

(EDIT)William Richer was a publican in 1841 - his widow Elizabeth was down as Licensed Victualler in 1851 and 1861(still at the Red Lion). In 1871 she is 74 and living at the Licensed Victuallers Asylum, a retirement home for publicans - google it there's lots of info on it!

Lots more searching to do then..................................!
Night night

PS Gorleston on sea is just south of Great Yarmouth and southtown is a stones throw from Great Yarmouth so that figures

Julie - thats great, thanks, but once again rubbish Genealogist site must've mistranscribed (is that a word?) Elizabeth Richer in 1871.

Is the Licensed Victuallers Asylum in London? Rotherhithe?

Or, maybe you could give me the piece number of the census if you still have it to hand? I'd really like to find the census.

Will def look at the National Archives site for John Holland but haven't had time yet - we had a busy weekend!!

Sue -- do a search of the boards here for "mistranscribed".

It is very definitely a word, and probably ranks right behind "the" for frequency of use hereabouts. ;)

Thank you Julie, I found it using they reference you gave me.

No wonder I couldn't find it before - Genealogist had surname transcribed as Raper!!!! Evie - I sent correction to them!!!

Also found her death in 1874 in Camberwell, age 78.

Will look for Nicholas Wood tomorrow cos eyes are drooping now.

They are tiny almshouses but they are still there. My OH thinks they are called St Catherines something. (He would be dangerous if he had a memory) Someone I used to kow lived there.
