Douglas Report 23 Jan 2014 15:02

Hello Derek, with regard to my great grandmother Mary Jane Smaller, she was born
1874 Scarborough, her Fathers name was Henry Smaller but when she was married in 1897 her father had died. His occupation was given as a Captain, cannot find her on any census, any help would be appreciated, she married William Rawling Hellyar
in 1897 at St Judes church in South Shields. Any help would be appreciated.

Derek Report 23 Jan 2014 17:55

Hi Douglas.............not easy......you say that Henry was a Captain..........that is almost certainly at Sea................I d know that an awful lot of SMALLERS came from the Lincolnshire Coast..and were fishermen or mariners..all the way up the Lincs and Yorks east coast................It is very likely that henry spent most of the Census years at sea........and probably in hisl ater years was a Skipper.......

The records that I can find are sparse, but we have a couple in the Boston Area..one of whom married aMaria Eleanor Fisher in 1864 in Scarborough..another married a Mary Balls in Caistor in 1872

Mary E Fisher does appear on the 1881 Census as a Fishermans wife..but no mention of mary Jane or henry.....

Mary Jane Smaller married William rawlingHellyar in 1897........William was born Padstow Cornwall 1867............and i bet he was also part of a Fishing community..and found his way to South Shields in a boat!!......

They are both on the 1901 and 1911 Censuses...........It looks like one of them at least was unable to have children because in 1901 they have an adopted son born 1887 George T Cole..who by 1911 is George T Hellyar.......along with another adopted child Beatrice Young Rickley born 1909.........both of these children were from Durham......maybe even from the same place.even an orphanage????

would be interested to know if you knew of these two children......

George..I now have the Birth Certificate for RUBY BREWER 17.04.1927..daughter of John Richard brewer ..Ships Bosun...born at 9 Westbourne Terrace, Westbourne Street Hull
The informant is Susannah her mother..clearly Joh Richard is away on Fishing business........but I see that you have been asking questions of this family for about three years, and getting answers from lots of hard working volunteers.on different Threads....... and after all my hard work, it appears that you know it all.....far more than you originally claimed.which makes my hard work pretty redundant.........and i can imagine other people, as well as myself, getting pretty annoyed.
I have now lost interest in helping you any further..

Sorry if I annoyed you but all I am trying to find out is why my brother told me that story above. As you have confirmed the Brewer at 184 Coltman Street is not in my tree. So I am trying to find out if John Richard ever lived in that Street but at another house No. Thank You. Regards George

Is there any mention of Peter Charles Connolly? He married an Ann Sweeney in Sheffield in 1861. I am trying to discover when he left Eire. He was born in 1838 in Cork or Wicklow and his father was Michael Connolly.

Derek Report 3 Apr 2014 15:07

Hello Charles..I think you could be struggling to go back any further. I don't have rerods for Aberford, but Family Search does.............but not before 1750. You have to realise that we are doing pretty well even at that time because so much of parish reoords are simply unreadable.

However i do have the marriage of ROBERT LENNOX to MARY GREENWOOD at Sherburn-in-Elmet 14.02.1774..along with four of their children confirmed:-

David baptised 27.07.1783
Ann baptised 10.08.1794
Joseph baptised 25.09.1785
Mary baptised 18.03.1793...all at Aberford..

There are children for Joseph above including Charles Lennox....

and A Robert Lennox married to Ann Dickens 06.12.1803 seems to be roughly contemporary to Joseph..and had chidlren at Barwick in Elmet..may have been Joseph's brother..or may even have been your Robert in a second marriage..

There is a tree on Ancestry that gives four more children for Robert and Mary, but looks dubious

Tell me what you think.

Derek.
