THE GODDARD-FENWICK CONNECTION

‘Our’ Evelyn seems to have been named after a lady named Evelyn Gertrude Savile Goddard-Fenwick who was her Godmother.

'Our' Evelyn's full name is EVELYN PATRICIA KATHLEEN and she was born in Dafforne Road, London in 1932.

I have been in touch with the vicar of the parish in which Dafforne Road is situated but he was unable to find a record of a baptism. I am currently in the process of contacting the next parish. When ‘Our’ Evelyn was 2 years old, the family moved to Weymouth.

There must have been a certain closeness between Diane and Evelyn for her to name her daughter after her.

So, what about Evelyn G.S. Goddard-Fenwick?

Born 1875 in Jersey.

Parents: George S. Goddard. Paymaster in R.N. and Christophine S. C. Fenwick
(nee Fenwick). Some work has been done on Christophine, but it doesn't seem to impact on our research so I won't muddy the waters at the moment.

Siblings:
Christophine F. 1870-1947
William H.W. 1874-1965
Emily G. 1877-1952
George D. 1880-1961 Edit: marries a PATRICIA
Gwendoline 1881
Louisa 1883-1935

Christophine, Gwendoline and Louisa became Nuns and William was ordained into Ministry. Emily lived with Evelyn.

In 1881 the family are living in Stoke Damerel, Devon.

In 1891 at school in Paignton, Devon with sister Louisa. - Edit.

In 1901 in South Kennington

In 1911 in Clapham - listed as a teacher of Piano, Violin and singing

She then stays in the Wandsworth area : Foulsar Road : Dafforne Road.

Edit: One of the residents in Dafforne Road was a KATHLEEN McDowell.

In 1927 she is spotted travelling to Canada on board the Ausonia for her brother's wedding.

She returns, 3 months later on the Ascania.

Evelyn G-F taught at the City of London School for Girls. They have been contacted but nothing on her was found.

Evelyn died in 1943 in Wandsworth. I have a copy of her will in which she leaves various items to
relatives:

Violin to her niece Veronica Goddard-Fenwick
Royalties from her compositions to her niece Evelyn Mary Goddard-Fenwick
Mother's paintings and miniature of her grandfather to her nephew Willougby Goddard-Fenwick
Old chinaware to nephew Theodore
Portrait of Heiress of Rushworth - an ancestor - to cousin Marcus Stapleton Martin.
The remainder went to Emily her sister.

We have traced some living Goddard-Fenwicks living in Wales but, despite phone calls and letters, they were not overly co-operative.

I found a connection on FB who was extremely helpful but muddled up the Evelyn we were looking at with her niece Evelyn Mary. Nothing further was gained.

That's it in a nutshell. I intend to see if I can now trace some of the relatives of people in the will. A longshot I know but................................. :-S

May I suggest that, if anyone comes up with something else, I copy it onto this item and then the finder can delete it. That way, we may be able to make more sense of our findings.

Hope that makes sense.

:-D

No I haven't got a copy of it yet Ann.....I'm hoping Evelyn will manage to get it over the weekend.

I have though, found a reference to it on here.....page 51.....Witnesses: E.M. Roy - the bridegroom's mother and an F.H. Pratt, friend of the bridegroom.......

Kay, not sure about the newspapers to be honest......do you have access at all?

I'm only up to page 30....... Just saw that Evelyn says he was in 1st Battalion Seaforth Highlanders which she appears to have seen on Diane's marriage cert - she hadn't mentioned the battalion before. I think we need to see that marriage cert. Have you got a copy of it?

Ann...............I think you're just wonderful....... :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

Vanessa, I'm not sure that those Diane's were checked as we were concentrating on Scotland.

Kathy.......you're quite right, we don't know for certain that Aunt Kate's name was MacLeod.

Would you be willing to check anything on the107 year old lady's records please. There is some info on here - from about last summer I think. If you could then post it on here as a complete item, we can then either forget about it or move on with it. Many thanks for your great offer.

Thanks to you Renes too............could you please draw together all that we have on Diane's time at the Springfield hospital. It may help us to either give that closure or open another avenue. :-)

Would anyone like to volunteer to check the passengers lists which have been posted on here re the possibility of Diane travelling back/forth to India (or wherever). Again, if they could be posted we can rule them out ......or not!

Kay, this search is composed of many 1m dollar questions!!

In answer to your questions - as best as I can......Diane was in London because she was working at the Springfield Hospital. Why London, we do not know but, apparently it was quite common for young girls from Scotland to travel down to London as nurses. I remember reading that somewhere.

Evelyn has absolutely no idea as to why relatives weren't mentioned and that's part of the point of her search. Does she have any maternal family somewhere? We've wondered if there was something that Diane was ashamed of ie maybe illegitimacy etc...... who knows??

Apparently, Diane told her children that she lived in Stornoway with Aunt Kate- you can see a bit of the story on the first page of this thread.

Thanks everyone - am now going back to the G-F's!!!

Kay???? Report 26 Apr 2013 16:15

Diane would have been 22/23 when she married in 1929,if fact are right,

There are a few things,

Why was she in London,,,,,,a very long way at the time from Stornoway,,,,,,,did she come down because relatives were here,?

why did she never mention her mother or any siblings she may have had?

as far as Evelyn knows Diane had no contact with Scotland or at least Evelyn never.

Where did she get sent from to Stornoway.?

Cousins at the time could have been a parents cousins,

If any answers are out there then it lies in Stornoway and some personal local digging about coupled with Edinboro.plus money spending in areas such as Wills,a personal search is more productive than any online as many documents arent online that could be looked at.

It wasnt unusual for army people to leave their children behind when they went abroad back then, sometime with family sometimes at a boarding or prep school.,,,,,,,,

Re your post

Would you have time to bring it altogether and post it as a complete post so that I can make a note of the page where all of the military stuff is, and refer people to that page when they ask if such-and-such has been looked at?

OK, will do. I may be gone some time......

I have reached page 70 of this thread............. xjskwirufndpqkeicnay.....is now how I am beginning to see things!! :-D

It is VERY hard not to get side-tracked but I have tried to stick to simply getting details about the G-F family. It's coming together nicely and has given me some more thoughts.

Funnily enough Vanessa, I have just passed something about DNA - somewhere on the pages 60-70.

Going for lunch......... ~~~~~~~~~

Vanessa Report 26 Apr 2013 10:48

I'm sure I've seen somewhere that there is a MacLeod DNA project - is this something Evelyn might consider, to see if indeed Diane was a MacLeod?? Not sure how these things work, but just another angle that might tell us if we are on the right track??

Good morning........ :-)

Thank you Ann.....I think you probably have covered most aspects of the military side but, can I ask a favour.........please?

I just think it would be great to be able to say (in answer to a query)......"please look at page *** which shows you which records have already been searched."

I will keep a note of which page each section is posted. Hopefully, that should bring things up-to-date and avoid further searching through 99 pages of theories.

Are there any volunteers to bring together all the Springfield Hospital notes we have on Diane please? Is that a hand I see waving in the background??? :-D

Now, where is there a kind person who could tell us where has been searched re the very old lady whose death Diane referred to as 'Aunt Kate', when reading a newspaper in Devon? :-D :-D

As I have some free time today, I will try and gather the Goddard Fenwick stuff together and get it posted.

I'll have a quick look and get started before I make the beds............. ;-)

Just popping in.......good to see the thread on the move again.

Think we can rule out Deidre as possibly being Diane- the name rang a bell & I found her marriage some time back:
