The Durham Maces in 1881 in Winlaton, Durham

Edward Mace 31 (born Huntingdonshire)
Elizabeth Mace 30 (born Cumberland)
Annie Mace 2
Lucy Mace

They're a tad odd and I hope we don't have to get into them.

There is no birth record for that Lucy and no marriage for Edward & Elizabeth. Let us hope they are red herrings.

*If* our Gertrude Mace was born in Norfolk, these are *not* her people.

The Atkinsons seem to have visited to stay -- I didn't realize I was looking at 1901 and you had put the 1891 above.

1901

Joseph Blake 45
Martha Blake 43
Phoebe Mace 81
Edward Mace 49 - brother in law
Lucy Mace 19
William Gramshaw 28
George Atkinson 44 - brother in law
John O Atkinson 18
Frederick O Atkinson 16
Ada Atkinson 11

Are these the same Lucy and Edward that Sean put at the top of the page, enumerated twice??

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 1 May 2009 00:34

Now that Lucy Mace in 1891 with the Atkinsons visiting is very interesting. Entirely possible they wouldn't have bothered reporting her place of birth accurately.

And they're in Gateshead district, so that's very probably the Lucy Mace who married there in 1904.

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 1 May 2009 00:29

Here's a Lucy Mace in Norfolk who could possibly be a sister:

Births Dec 1886
Mace Lucy Erpingham 4b 64

Can't see her in 1901.

If the family did go to Durham, this could be her marriage:

Marriages Mar 1904
Corlett Ann Jane Gateshead 10a 1131
> Mace Lucy Gateshead 10a 1131
Nicholson Joseph Gateshead 10a 1131
Scott James Gateshead 10a 1131

but if so, she doesn't seem to be in Durham in 1911, unless she's not reporting her birthplace accurately.

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 1 May 2009 00:20

In 1911, the place of birth of

ATKINSON GERTRUDE 1883 28 Sedgefield Durham

who was living with

ATKINSON CHARLES S 1909 2 Sedgefield Durham
ATKINSON WILLIAM F 1884 27 Sedgefield Durham

was ***NORFOLK*** !!!

I searched with Norfolk as place of birth, and yes, she came up.

I tried Norwich, and no, she didn't. So it was Norfolk but not Norwich.

Births Dec 1884
Mace Gertrude Lilly Norwich 4b 145

The other places in Norwich reg dist were

Earlham
Easton
Heigham
Lakenham

None of them work in 1911 -- but there were undoubtedly other dinky little places in the district.

Sean, have you looked at that 1911 census record? I forget.

You really need to, if not. If you have, what does it say for their places of birth?????

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 26 Apr 2009 00:21

Okay, if Gertrude was married before, her name at birth wasn't Mace.

Because she married as Mace -- and if she'd been born Mace and married before, she wouldn't have marred Boagey/Atkinson as Mace. Unless she was committing bigamy or otherwise trying to hide her first marriage for some reason.

There is very little point in trawling around censuses trying to find someone who might have married a Mace and then married Atkinson/Boagey!

Get the Mace+Atkinson marriage certificate and it will *tell* you whether she had been married before, and if so, what her name was before her first marriage.

That is the only way you're going to find that first marriage, if it existed, which I really don't think it did, and possibly any children of it.

But really, Sean, the thing is -- we have found Gertrude in the 1911 census, and she *was* born in Norfolk, and she was really barely old enough to have had a marriage before marrying Boagey/Atkinson -- so there really isn't any reason to think she wasn't the Gertrude Mace who was born in Norfolk.
