ER's were taken but would be no use for finding Robert or his mother as neither would be eligible to vote

I am still trying to trace the birth of Robert Ellick. I have found an Emma Ellick born abt 1846 in Ireland on 1871 Channel Islands census, living as a lodger with John and Bridget Lowman
I am wondering if she could be Robert's mother, but cannot find her in any other records. I know I am clutching at straws, but the Robert Ellick I found on 1861 cenus was from Channel Islands.
Any help would be appreciated.

You won’t necessarily ‘find’ a birth from the Channel Islands. They have their own systems. Sometimes thry do come up on Ancestry but you would have to apply for any documents direct. They are not covered by the GRO.

Hello nameslessone
Thank you, have not found anything on Ancestry.

If you know the parish he was likely to have been born in you can apply for the birth record. Google for instructions how to do it.

Have you taken a fresh look at Family Search ?

I don't think my husbands grandfather was born in the Channel Islands, various documents quote birth in Birmingham and "at sea". I was trying to trace records for Emma Ellick born 1846 hoping this would lead to Robert Ellick.

From earlier posts on this thread, I thought you'd decided that the man in 1861 census was Elliott, and not Ellick? In which case, the Channel Islands seem like a red herring.

Birmingham is given as Robert Ellick's place of birth in more than one record.

Find My Past are said to have 'Births at Sea'records

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 27 May 2022 17:59

As he was born before 1875, there may simply not be a birth registration. No penalties for not registering until 1875

Did he name a father when he married?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 27 May 2022 17:59

The National Archives (UK) states that any record made of a birth or death at sea from 1837 onward was sent directly to the General Register Office and recorded in the Marine Register.

Unfortunately, digital records of births, marriages and deaths at sea on board British ships incur a cost to search them. Find My Past allows you to search the indexes of the General Register Office and National Archive overseas records of births, marriages/banns and deaths/burials. They also allow you to search for an individual ship should you know its name. Be warned that some years are absent from the record, and any marriage which took place on board a merchant ship was not legally valid.

But having looked on FMP, there's no Robert Ellick or similar c1874

Janice said his father's name was stated to be Robert William Ellick, deceased.

JaneyCanuck suggested that it could be an invented name, if he didn't know who his father was.

Not that that helps find any other record for her, however.

Yes, just read back on previous posts, and would concur with the suggestion that the father was invented. Quite a regular occurrence to hide illegitimacy

Thank you all for your help it is much appreciated. When I found what I thought was Emma Ellick in Channel Islands on 1871 census I thought she may have a connection to Robert Ellick/Elliott on 1861 census. Wrong again.
