Find Ancestors

I am trying to find out where a particular family lived.Here is how Ancestry deciphered it:
1871 census Registration Number: 644/1
Registration district: Central District
Civil parish: Glasgow Inner High
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 2 B Rotterson
ED: 64
Household schedule number: 17
Line: 13
Roll: CSSCT1871_124
This was given to me by a very kind member of Genes as I do not have Ancestry - I wonder if it is possible to view before or after pages to maybe find another street name?As
I cannot find a Rotterson street/avenue etc around Glasgow.
Any ideas or advise appreciated

But there is a Rottenrow in Glasgow

What are the names of the family etc. Might be able to find them in another census living nearby. This may help confirm this census area.

Think this 1871 census may be:

Robertson Street or
Rottenrow

Both are in the central part of Glasgow

Could well be Rottenrow .... as it is not termed a Street or Road and Rottenrow would probably come under the Inner High area of Glasgow ... near to Glasgow Cathedral.

There about 40 people on 1871 census with the same address so could be a tenement block

But my people are named Maguire.

Excuse my ignorance but what is a' tenement block' and are there many in Glasgow or where they just common in 1871.

a tenement block is a block of flats ....... or apartments (if you're in North America)


They were and are very common in many parts of Scotland, right from the early days to today.


Many of them in the 1800s were of course poor .. and still are. But some were of superior quality.

Even the lords and ladies lived in tenement style buildings in Edinburgh.

Yes it is me on the other thread with the birth notice.

However, it was Andrew who sent the 1871 census. Ancestry are often way off the mark at transcribing the writing on census ... so may well have come up with the name Nannie for Maguire. If you have looked at the original record from Scotlandspeople do the two match up otherwise ?

When you look at the Scotlandspeople census image, can you imagine it looks like Rottenrow ?

Another way to verify the address is:

Go back into Scotlandspeople.
Bring up the previous viewed image of the 1871 census.
Click ... View Free Header.

This will bring up the first page of the Enumerator's book describing which streets he covered while taking the census. You should be able to see whether Rottenrow comes under his census area.

Rottenrow is where the maternity hospital was in Glasgow. Hence it crops up quite often.

Anne, I suspect you haven't noticed how old this thread is!
