Oh well. I have enough cousins anyhow ... but I thought I did offer some "help or clues" regarding Robert Hoar born c1817 in Saltash ..

And the thing is, Hoar / Hoare / Hore is actually quite a common name in Cornwall. Nicholas is also fairly common around those parts and does run in families -- it appears frequently in the Bond family my Francis Hoare Hill married into.

1861
Civil parish: Saltash
Registration district: St Germans
County/Island: Cornwall

Nicholas Hoare 35 - born Saltash c 1826; captain of river steamer
>> Robert Hoare 11
Edwin Hoare 9
John Hoare 6
Nicholas Hoare 3
Samuel Hoare 2
Jane Hoare 4
Mary Hoare 35
Sarah Hoare 80

>> The Robert you inquired about, in 1901:

Name: Robert N Hoar
Age: 50
Estimated birth year: abt 1851
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Margaret A
Where born: Saltash, Cornwall, England
Town: Hurworth
County/Island: Durham

I would think it quite likely that this Nicholas Hoare c1826, father of the Robert Nicholas Hoar in Durham, is a brother of Robert Hoar c1817, father of your Stephen.

I was pretty definiitely wrong on the 1841 census I posted on page 1; this one looks more like:

Civil parish: St Stephen By Saltash
Registration district: St Germans

Robert Hoare 20 - Navy
Betsey Hoare 20
John Hoare 2
James Greet 40

... I had miscalculated son Nicholas's age; he would not have been born in 1841.
In 1851, your Robert Hoar's occupation was Coast Guard and Boat Man.

The 1841 Robert I posted before was likely the one married to Maria Anna Broad (submitted records in the IGI):

Deaths Dec 1839
Hoar Maria St Germans 9 119
