It's not really strange to go through the trees Sozzie, a lot of helpers do that when helping folk.

I often do it when someone is search for relatives on this site so that I can point them in the right direction.

Sounds like an extended family indeed.... :-D

You may not have asked for help Scozzie, but Cynthia spends a lot of time on the boards helping new people find there way back to their threads....also advising people they have posted on old threads.

If you feel you should reply on them, with the off chance of getting a reply then carry on

That is what we do Scozzie....look to see if anyone else has these people in their tree then we come back to the thread and inform the poster, as in:-

"Do you know there are "X" amount of people who also have Joe Blow in their tree are you in contact with them?"

As you said you had 58 people with the same name in your tree, I think it would be easly found that you had not....No mention at this time that it was not on your GR tree

So when someone replies to an old thread whether they are new or not shall we just ignore it? That would not look very good to a new person who was sitting by their PC waiting for a reply and never got one

That's actually the best think you can do Scozzie - pm the poster. If you hadn't pm'd him, I wonder if he would have seen your message on his thread?

I know you didn't ask for help, but I was trying to help you and you certainly weren't annoying me - it's what I do on here. I'm not very adept at doing lookups but I do like helping out and, this is the way I do that.

I have been sending advice to members daily for about 4-5 years now and, according to GR, it seems I have the largest mailbox on the site and I am in the process of clearing it out.

This problem could easily be resolved if

a) GR would make the guidelines about how to find your thread clearer, and
b) if the new members would only stop and read about how the site works.

The word 'discussions' is extremely misleading as most of the old posts are people searching for relatives but who, having received no reply or have not known how to find their replies, may simply have left the site.

The 'discussions' are mostly dead in the water.

Hope that helps. Cx.

Good news then! :-D

Good advice about the maiden names......I've made that mistake in the past.....doh!

Not sure I want to go as wide as having 8th cousins though......I have about 1,500 on my tree....think that's all I can cope with. :-D

Sounds like you have a bad case of 'Jungle Fever' Scozzie :-D

You can probably google to find out how the Mormons lived with their multitudes of wives and kids. Bet they went deaf early!!! :-D
