JeanetteB Report 1 Apr 2013 15:01

We only know about the marriage, I would like to know if they divorced, or he died or maybe immigrated. I believe he may have come from Pavia in Northern Italy. If anybody knows anything about him I would love to hear from you. Also the marriage took place in London Jan 1926. My mothers name was Rachel Penikoff.
she married my father in 1940 in Ireland. I believe she met my father in London about
the year 1932.

There appear to be 3 entries on the New York passenger lists on Ancestry for a Carlo Bassi, which may or may not be him. There is also an entry for a birth , Como & Lecco, Lombardy Italy on the Italian Registration records.
Don´t have worldwide Ancestry, so can´t look for you, but i´m sure someone on here will.

Never realised but there are loads of men called Carlo Bossi in US!

Could be hard to narrow it down.

Jeanette - what was your mother's marital status on the certificate for her remarriage? Was she widowed or divorced?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 1 Apr 2013 16:32

The Como and Lecco results on Ancestry are misleading. There is a Carlo Antonio Bossi who was born and died 1897, father Luigi.

Also a Guiseppe Bossi born 1896, father Carlo.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 1 Apr 2013 16:35

This fits the birthplace:

U.S., World War II Draft Registration Cards, 1942

Name: Carlo Bossi
Birth Date: 12 Oct 1895
Birth Place: Pavia, Italy
Residence: Long Island City, New York
Race: White

He worked Coq Rouge Restaurant, NYC.

Gave two addresses:
4508 40th Street, Long Island and 4705 55 Street, Woodside, Queens.

For the name of the person who would always know him he gave Domenico Ronzitti of the same address.

Liam Report 2 Apr 2013 01:36

Possible Connection.

There's are 2 records of a Carlo Bossi on FMP where he is registered in the merchant navy as a waiter, last one 1928 [aged 33] in Southampton

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 2 Apr 2013 07:41

Well spotted, Liam.

The records have little detail but look at the birthdate, it's the same as the WW2 draft above:

Merchant Navy Seamen 1835-1941

Last name: BOSSI
First names: Carlo
Age:
Day of birth: 12
Month of birth: October
Year of birth: 1895
Place of birth: Italy
County/country of birth: Italy
Card type: CR1
Discharge number: R 52488
Identity certificate no.:
Series: BT349
Date range: 1921-1941

The document is dated 2 October 1928

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 2 Apr 2013 07:55

There are numerous passenger lists with men named Carlo Bossi born in Italy around the same time but the birthplace and/or father's name doesn't quite fit.

However, this record ties in with the Merchant Navy card above:

New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
Name: Carlo Bossi
Arrival Date: 9 Oct 1928
Birth Date: abt 1895
Age: 33
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/ Nationality: Italian (North)
Port of Departure: Southampton, England
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Olympic

It's a crew list so there is very little personal info (he was 5' 4" and weighed 140lb).

His occupation was waiter.

Have sent Jeanette a pm in case she wants any of the images if she thinks this is her man. Also, some feedback would be useful.

Have checked divorce records on National Archives but they only go up to 1937.

MarieCeleste Report 7 Apr 2013 11:43

pm from Jeanette:

"1895 would probably have been his birth date or thereabouts. According to the marriage in 1926 he was aged 30. they were married in the Register office district of St Pancras date of marriage 13/01/1926. his occupation Hotel waiter.
Also his fathers name was Alfredo Bossi his occupation, Hotel Chef
My mother and father were married in Ireland 09/04/1940 . I would love to see any images that you have. Thank you for all the information.
Regards Jeanette"

You're very welcome Jeanette.

Just one question - do you have your mum's marriage certificate from 1940 as I've been unable to find a record of it? If so, what was her marital status on it? (Sorry, that's 2 questions!)

Just reply using the "Add your reply" box below.

JeanetteB

JeanetteB Report 7 Apr 2013 23:19

My mother and Father were married in Ireland in the diocese of Killala on 9th April 1940 parish of Skreen and Dromard
names on certificates are Peter Henry (my father) and Mary Angela Rafaeli (mother)

It does not give her marital status.
Another certificate states that they were married in St Muredachs church in Ballina Co Mayo.
a further cert. mentions the names Psenichnikow and Penikoff.
(Psenichnikow was her birth name ,the family changed it to Penikoff and eventually Penn)
Regards Jeanette

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 7 Apr 2013 23:34

Just to check, are Rachel Penikoff and Mary Angela Rafaeli the same person?

Vicci

Vicci Report 8 Apr 2013 01:56

Rafaeli = Rachel??

on the marriage reg to Carlo first name just says RAY

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 8 Apr 2013 08:17

Quite coincidentally someone else is researching St Muredachs
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/genealogy_chat/thread/1322827

Going back to the main point of the thread which was to find Carlo Bossi, I do think that the man we've tracked through the merchant seaman record, the passenger list, the census, the draft and the naturalisation papers are the right man.

The trail ends in 1946 as I haven't found a death for him (perhaps he went back to Italy?)
