If he married in 1898 to Elizabeth hannah Cropper ( and I can't find a death until 1927 for an E H Jones) then we should be able to find John With ELIZABETH in 1901 & 1911

If that 1911 one with May is a mistranscription and it should be E H then we should be able to find John, E H AND Nellie in 1901

That's the trouble Ann-I've looked extensively for John+ Elizabeth in 1901 and can't find them.

Did you see my post last night with the idea they were estranged?

Also if Martyn's Nellie Jones is in fact Ellen Leicester then she wasn't born to John + Elizabeth.

I've also tried to trace back on Elizabeth Hannah Cropper through the census' & can't identify her-(there was one on freebmd born 1869 in Oldham)

Very frustrating!

The only thing that ties this Jones + Cropper marriage to Martyn is Norman's birth certificate. That birth in itself is a bit strange as there is only one other Jones + Cropper birth in 1899 - unless they lived somewhere else inbetween.

Martyn- does your mum think that Norman was born in 1915 or is that date based on his death certificate?

The first qtr of births on freebmd is incomplete for 1915 so I'll try and look at the indexes for Jones

having a look for grandfather's ww1 records do you have any other info than Manchester regt. i.e an army number?
could Norman have been born anywhere else? could mother have moved to a safer place as it was during the war?
