I started a search for John Dooley and his spouse and Evelyn. I was going to give you the task of finding the info. The search has become very complicated. I have deleted the info.

Would you like to have a go at finding out about John Dooley. Use the NSW BDM to search. You may also need to search in the UK so use the FREEBMD or the Familysearch web site. Google these.

You will need to establish if your George Dooley was born in Australia or in the UK. Post what you find on this thread. Have fun and see what you discover.

Hi Janice. Just had a look at your tree. You are definitely making progress, well done.

Have you discovered the FreeBDM and FreeCen web sites. They are good for checking birth deaths and marriages for UK residents after 1837.

This is the web address.
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

Click on search and have a play around. You can also access the census through that link.

JanieCanuk, how are you.You are the clever little chickie i was refering to I was not quite sure who it was as you have all worked so tirelessly in giving up your own time to help a newcomer like myself.(who continually frustrated you.)Your bloods worth bottling' thanks once again Janice

Hi Janice, Yes of course you can remove me from access to your tree. Have you clicked on full tree and taken a look at where everything fits together. You will be able to see what needs fixing.

You can now add your new information to the tree and then keep working back.

I think 'twas possibly Janey who found your UK info. She is handy to have around sometimes, and is nearly almost always most times correct with what she says.

By the way, if you are hooked on this history business it might be worth your while to take out a subscription with a family history web site. Would suggest you try the Ancestry 14 day free trial. Don't forget to cancel before your 14 days runs out if you are not interested. Alternatively you can opt for buying credits to start with. It depends how far you wish to go. You can also do it using the Family Search and FreeBDM and possibly RootsWeb sites with the info from your library (where Ancestry is available free).

Whoo hoo Hi Janice, thanks for contacting the GR members with the same names you are researching. We will all sit with our fingers crossed and wait for replies.

Nope.... We will sit but you will work on your tree. Aunty cracks whip!!! Trust me it won't take long.

JaneyCanuck Report 11 Apr 2010 02:54

Tweren't no information at all on that new thread, eh?

It started out just like this one - coupla names, coupla places, no dates ... we just happened to have spotted the earlier version of this one and gone to town. I think Janice still had the idea that it was family members who would see it and recognize the names and reply, is why.

Janice, I'd really just go and delete that Charles Witaker thread. I've put info about him in this one now so it's just a dead letter.

Really, really recommend trying to contact the GR members with these names in their trees. They may not reply -- a lot of people don't keep current at this site -- but it's sure worth a try.

Janey and to Janice for info. Wondered if there is anything on the new thread which needs to be put on here. I really agree with your leaving it to go away. At this stage all the info on this thread needs to be put in the tree. Then we can start branching out. It will still be recoverable as a resource when we are up to including information from it.

Now you need to decipher what I am going to tell you.

You said is possible for you to travel to a big city near you. And I understand the isolation bit. Pick the largest city and the next time you are there go visit the Public Library.

Tell them you are doing family history research and they will show you lots of goodies you can play with. You will also be able to access information on line for free. You can ask about electoral rolls and BMD indexes and a wonderful book called the Sands Directory. And go through newspapers.

Make sure you take a notebook and pencil and a list of questions you need answered.

AuntySherlock

AuntySherlock Report 11 Apr 2010 01:51

Janice, The more you read all this information the more it will make sense. Go over it again and again until you know exactly where to find the info on the pages.

I have looked at your tree. You need to do two things which will make what Janey and Cynthia are saying very clear.

Go to your tree and click on each of the women's names in turn and change their names to their birth name. So Evelyn Horne will become Evelyn Dooley. Floria J will become Floria J. Horne. DO NOT PUT THE WOMEN IN WITH THEIR MARRIED NAMES. (This is called emphaising a point - not yelling).

Then click on each of the people, and from the printed copy of your thread and go through and put in the names of parents and children and dates of birth as listed in the thread info. I usually copy and paste the thread info into a word document then print it.

That will do for a start. You have a good beginning of a tree. It will not take long to sort it out.

By the way click on a couple of your Dulcie's in the tree and delete them. You have her three times. (And there might be three of them!!) We can sort out exactly where she sits later on.

Timetable yourself an hour a day to work on your tree. You might not be able to afford that much time but try to make a regular time.

Floria T V Stanway, born 1907, married Charles F Whitaker in1929.

This would be his birth:

39721/1907
WHITAKER CHARLES F
father THOMAS V
mother CATHERINE
ROCKDALE

There is no death recorded for him before 1979 either.

Now, let's get these tree searches sorted out.

Up above, there is a row of buttons. The third from the left says "Search Trees".

Click that button. Search for Floria Horne. The name is very uncommon, so you don't have to bother with dates or places.

Two people have that name in their family trees.

Then search for Charles Whitaker. A much more common name, so put 1907 as the year of birth, and make it +/- 2 years (because people are often vague on years of their ancestors' birth).

One person has Charles Whitaker born in 1907 in Australia.

She is the same as one of the people who have Floria Horne in their trees - her name is Margaret.

Click on the "Find out more" button beside her name. You can send her a message. Tell her that Floria Horne was the sister of your Sydney, so if she is descended from Floria Horne and Charles Whitaker, you are cousins!

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 10 Apr 2010 20:11

Janice, you said:

"i think that the Floria TV Horne has been born in Australia/what State and her husband Whittaker Charles F as well but by this time her given name was Stanaway."

Keep in mind there were two Florias.

1. Floria J Horne born in 1887, daughter of John and Jessie Horne, sister of Sydney.

That Floria married Stanway in 1906 and died as Floria Stanway.

2. Her daughter Floria TV Stanway (not Horne) born in 1907.

That Floria married Whitaker in 1929.

AuntyS, I think Janice was referring to a new thread:

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1215450

It's sinking nicely now which I think is the best thing for it.

Janice, it's really wise to get what you already have sorted out before setting off on a new search. All the info has been waiting for decades now. A couple more weeks while you get it organized and get your head around it isn't going to make much difference.

Starting new threads will just scatter your attention too widely. As you can see, the new one you started contained too little information for anyone to help you really.

Since there are several people in this thread who have a handle on what you will be looking for, it makes far more sense just to continue here for now. None of us even knew of that thread (I did a board search for "Floria" and found it), and we're the ones who know what it's all about. And there's just no point (and it isn't really fair) in inviting a whole new batch of people to embark on a search that will involve so much of the same info.

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 10 Apr 2010 19:46

Me again. Janice there are, in fact, two members on this site who have Floria in their tree. So I don't know how you didn't find them. This is what you do:

Look at the top of the page and put Floria Horne into the search box. Click on Search.

It will say Results for Floria Horne. 2 family tree matches.
Underneath that it says 'view matches'. Click on the 'view matches'.

On the next screen it says 2 matches for Floria Horne and you will see Floria Horne 1887 St. Peter's NSW. One belongs to a Lorraine and one to a Margaret.

At the side you will see a purple button 'find out more' - click on each one and send a message asking about Floria and maybe what their connection is.

There is a tiny box underneath where you will type saying 'allow this member to view my tree' - click on that so that the tick goes away.

Hopefully, these two people are still active members and will get in touch with you. Cx.

Big Edit. Helps if you read the faded text properly. According to the 1930 NSW Electoral Roll, Floria Jane Stanway and Thomas Bayley Stanway Junior lived at 45 Harrow Road Bexley (Hurstville) NSW. Floria's occupation was home duties and Thomas was a hairdresser.
Thomas Bayley Stanway lived at 10 Edgehill St West Kogarah NSW his occupation is retired.

It is interesting to note that Thomas William Stanway lived at 69 Harrow Road Bexley. He was also a hairdresser.

In 1954 the Electoral Roll shows both Floria Jane and Thomas Bayley Stanway Jnr living at 69 Harrow Road. Thomas William is no longer there.

Will check which year Floria and Thomas B Jnr moved into 69 Harrow. I would say Thomas William Stanway was Thomas B's father.

Edit. Floria and Thomas B Jnr moved into 69 Harrow Road between 1933 and 1936.

This must be the death of Thomas Bayley Snr Floria's husband and Thomas Bayley Stanway Jnr's father. Thomas William Stanway was the grandfather. If I have it correct.

Registration Number Last Name Given Name(s) Father's Given Name(s) Mother's Given Name(s) District Purchase Certificate
18275/1932 STANWAY THOMAS B THOMAS 72 YRS (CARLTON) (-BAILEY) HURSTVILLE

Oh this is going to give you hours of fun. Here is the other deathin 1964.

Registration Number Last Name Given Name(s) Father's Given Name(s) Mother's Given Name(s) District

28425/1964 STANWAY THOMAS BAYLEY THOMAS SUSAN HANNAH ROCKDALE

Still can't find Thomas William Stanway's death. He is on the electoral roll. Perhaps Thomas William and Thomas Bayley Snr are the same person.

And it looks like mother's name was Susan Hannah Bayley.

I am going to copy the information Janey gave you about Fioria and add bits to it. The assumption is that Floria J. Horne is Sydney's sister.

The marriage information says Thomas B. Stanway married Floria J. Horne in Sydney in 1906.

marriage
9196/1906
STANWAY THOMAS B
HORNE FLORIA J
SYDNEY

This one says Floria Jane Stanway (whose father's name was John) died in 1957 aged 70 years in Rockdale NSW. This means she must have been born around 1887 if you take her age at death as accurate.

death
21946/1957
STANWAY FLORIA JANE
father JOHN
7O YRS
ROCKDALE

This one means Floria TV Stanway is the daughter of Thomas B and Floria J Stanway and was born in 1907 in Rockdale.

only birth before 1909:
28700/1907
STANWAY FLORIA T V
THOMAS B
FLORIA J
ROCKDALE

And this one is the marriage of Floria TV Stanway to Charles F. Whitaker in Rockdale in 1929.

marriage of child:
6120/1929
WHITAKER CHARLES F
STANWAY FLORIA T V
ROCKDALE

No death for Floria Stanway Whitaker before 1979.

Are you saying you misspelt the names when adding the information to your thread? If this is the case you can always correct what you type by clicking on the EDIT button on the post that needs correcting.

The Edit button is on the bottom lefthand side of the post on your thread. Edit Delete Add. Click Edit and change your spelling when the text comes up in the little box. And then click the submit button.

I have just edited this post because I figured out you don't need to know about editing your tree. Which is what I thought you might have been talking about.

Hi Cynthia and Janice.

I am not usually awake at this time of night. I went to bed early but now I'm wide awake.

To answer your question Janice about how to post a search query here is the information.

Your query should contain the basic elements other researchers need to determine whether they can help you. It should contain the answers to these questions:

Who is the person you are looking for?

What exact information do you want to know about the person?

Where did the person live? Where was the person born? Where did the person die?

When was the person born? When did the person die?

Now you might not have some of this information. So just put in what you do know but make certain you do give all the information you have available.
