Cathy in Portsmouth Report 9 Apr 2010 16:45

Hi Tony
Thanks for your offer. I have two relatives John and Simeon Nunn and their friend Ephraim Litchfield who were transported for assault and robbery on the squire's son.
They were convicted on 23rd July 1832 in Cambridge.
John Nunn was born in 1807 and married Charlotte Pet who died in 1835. They had two sons born 1830 and 1832. John married again in 1847 a Sarah Sanders in Brighton Tasmania. Obviously his first wife died after he had been transported so would he have known this to be able to marry again??
Simeon Nunn married a Mary Ann Argent in 1845 in Hobart Tasmania and apparently had 10 children between 1846 and 1873.

Their voyage date was 28th Sep 1832
The Vessel was Georgiana
Colony was Van Diemans Land Tasmania
Arrival date was 1st February 1833
Departure from Portsmouth 16th Oct 1832

Were they allowed to be married whilst they were transported or were they pardoned or released and how will i find the death dates for them.
Hope you can help me
thankyou
cathy

Hi Cathy in Portsmouth.

Tasmanian Archives show both John and Simeon NUNN received a CP ( Conditional pardon ) which meant neither could return to England.

Convicts that were not allowed to leave the Colony could re-marry, regardless of whether they were already married back in th U.K

They both would have needed a AP ( Absolute Pardon ) to return home.
Absolute Pardons allowed convicts to return to England as their sentences were totally cleared.

John Nunn:
Sentence details: Convicted at Cambridge Assizes for a term of life on 23 July 1832.
Vessel: Georgiana.
Date of Departure: 28 September 1832.
Place of Arrival: Van Diemen's Land.
Transported for Highway Robbery
Received 25 lashes for pilfering some clothes from another prisoner. Oct 13th 1834
Occ: Ploughman
Height: 5ft 2and a half inches.
Complexion :Dark
Whiskers: Dark Brown
Hair:Dark Brown
Eyes: Hazel

Received a CP ( Conditional Pardon ) March 1843

There is a death listed on Tasmanian BDM pioneer index in Hobart, of a John NUNN 12th Oct 1883..aged 80 years. Reg no:1241 Given that you say he was born 1807, its quite possible this is him. Taking into consideration that "ages" given on our index's can be a few years out.

Simeon Nunn:
Sentence details: Convicted at Cambridge Assizes for a term of life on 23 July 1832.
Vessel: Georgiana.
Date of Departure: 28 September 1832.

Height: 5ft 3 and a half inches.

Anchor on left arm.
18th Mar 1844 Gang...Absent without leave
3rd Mar 1841 Hard labour Gang.. Hobart.

Received a CP ( Conditional Pardon ) March 1845

This "could" be Simeon NUNN ( Marriage )
I wouldnt take to much notice of age given ( ie: birth 1820 )

Gender: Male
Birth 1820 -

Hi Zena.

Sorry..but cant see a Thomas DYKE/DYKES tranported to Australia ( 1850s )

The only Thomas DYKE on Australia tranportees index was a Thomas DYKE in 1824 on the "Princes Charlotte" to Tasmania... Convicted at Lancaster, Borough of Wigan.

Transportation to New South Wales ended circ. 1840

( V.D.L )Tasmania mid to late 1840s

By the late 1840s most convicts being sent to Van Diemens Land * Tasmania * (plus those to Victoria) were known as "exiles"

After early1850s....transportation continued in small numbers to Western Australia.
The last convict ship to arrive was in Western Australia, the "Hougoumont", left Britain in 1867 and arrived in Western Australia on 10 January 1868.

I have checked what records i can find for Western Australia, but unfortunatley there is no Thomas DYKE or DYKES 1852 listed.

Perhaps he was transported elsewhere? ( Canada - America )

Hi Susan. (TheButler )

Hope it helps.

From September 1844 until 1856, when it closed as a penal settlement, Norfolk Island was under the jurisdiction of the Tasmanian Government, and was staffed by the Tasmanian Convict Department. Throughout this period, male convicts were being transferred from there to Tasmania, as a result of their sentences there having expired, some had been sent there from Tasmania.

Hello TonyOz

I appreciate this might be a big request but here goes,

My family BREASLEY who originated in Ireland, emigrated to Australia as there are numerous families all around Australia.

Are you able to locate any convicts of this name that were sent to Oz as far as you can go back

Regards

Margaret

TonyOz

TonyOz Report 11 Apr 2010 12:06

Hi Margaret.

Sorry...but Australian convicts dont show any BREASLEY.

Checked Convicts on 1st Fleet, 2nd Fleet and 3rd Fleet also...nothing

Also checked.. "The Old Bailey "....nothing

Tried a few different ways of spelling..... BREESLEY/ BREESLY/BREASLEE./BREAZLEY. ect...but nothing regarding a convict.

Not much consulation but.....The name BREASLEY was well known in horse racing in Australia.

Arthur Edward "Scobie" Breasley was an Australian jockey. He won the Caulfield Cup in Melbourne five times: 1942-45 consecutively on Tranquil Star, Skipton, Counsel and St Fairy; then on Peshawar in 1952. He also won the Epsom Derby twice, and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe once....born 1914 in Wagga Wagga..N.S.W

Perhaps a relo?

Best wishes.

Tony ( Melbourne Vic. )

Thanks Tony

Yes I am aware of Scobie Breasley and I am trying to find out if he is a distant relative. I am not able to find out if his grandparents and my great grandparents are related as I am sure that they may have originated in Dublin, but due to census records being destroyed I cannot get confirmation.

Any ideas how I can move forward?

Grateful thanks

TonyOz Report 11 Apr 2010 14:39

Hi Margaret.

Below is a link to Arthur Edward *Scobie* BREASLEY line.

Arthur Edward Breasley born May 7 1914 Wagga Wagga ( one of 7 children ) and was the son of Sidney Thomas and Emily Maud Breasley ( maiden Newton )
His parents married in 1900 Wagga Wagga.

Sidney Thomas Breasley was born 20th Aug 1880 Wagga Wagga,( one of 12 children )and son of Daniel Kingsmill Breasley and Ellen Johnston

So Daniel Kingsmill Breasley would be Arthur ( Scobie ) Breasley's grandfather.

Daniel Kingsmill Breasley, was born 1852 Millers Point , Sydney, N.S.W son of Daniel Kenward Breasley who was born c.1821 in Selby, Yorkshire Eng.
He married Julia Ann Shaw born c.1833 Dublin Ireland.

Julie ann SHAW apparently...was the daughter of Zaccariah Shaw & Julia Anne Kavanagh.

If you copy this link it will give you more info on the Arthur "Scobie" BREASLEY lineage.

There is a Convict conection of *Shaw* to Breasley through Zaccariah Shaw

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/w/a/t/Ian-R-Watkins/WEBSITE-0001/UHP-Index.html

*scroll down to BREASLEY* There are quite a few.

Hope that helps.
