my ancestor William Stroud was transported to NSW in 1831 on the Eleanor (he was later pardoned)

he was born in 1794 so his death may well be

V1847463 32B/1847 STROUD WILLIAM AGE 53

Anything else you can find out would be helpful

TonyOz Report 10 Oct 2010 11:37

Hi Eric.

Not much info unfortunatley.

STROUD William Ship: Eleanor Year:1831 RW Date of Pardon: 1 Oct 1836
STROUD William ShiP: Eleanor AP ( Absolute Pardon )Year: 1837

With an AP ( Absolute Pardon ) he was entitled to return to the U.K as their sentences were totally cleared.

Applications to Marry = Nil
Colonial Secretary "Letters relating to Land" = Nil
Deceased Estates = Nil

One marriage showing for a William STROUD in 1864...NSW Registry bdm's, but if born 1794 as you say, i doubt this is him.

4/1864 STROUD WILLIAM spouse: PETTIT CAROLINE M District: SYDNEY
Checking STROUD births after this marriage, shows 7 children born to this William up to 1880...so definatley not your William.

One death that fits close to birth/bapt year 1794..but you already have this.....NSW
V1847463 32B/1847 STROUD WILLIAM AGE 53

A death cert index'd as such, wont have very much detail listed on it.
The informant who supplied the information, possibly knew very little, or nothing about this William STROUD.
It may be worth purchasing it to see whom the informant was, or any other details it might have?

Unfortunatley not very much is archived about this William STROUD.

The NLA ( Australian Newspapers ) 1803 to 1954 show two possible references to him.( one being a Pardon )"The Sydney Morning Herald"

http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home

Sorry, but cant see much more.
Perhaps he lived alone, and as such died alone?

thx tony

i am not unhappy if there are no new relationships/offspring as he had a wife and two children back in england

despite his pardon there is no evidence of any return to england and his family - presumably due to lack of money

hence my interest in tracing his stay/death in australia

Hi Terry.

With a surname such as SMITH,i would need a little more information, as it appears these brothers may have had second given names. It may be best also to contact "Tasmanian State Archives" to see what records might be found.( if any )

Did either Tommy or Randle Smith use or have a second given name?...as i cannot find a RANDLE/RANDAL/RANDALL.
TOMMY could be Thomas ( i would say )....but there were many THomas SMITH convicts arriving to Australia for Horse stealing.

How ever...........Tasmanian convict Archives does show two brothers transported on board the ship Susan ( 1 ).... both convicted at Suffolk quarter session for a term of Life. ( Saunders and Henry SMITH )

http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=11

Both are noted as being brothers, and sentenced for Horse stealing, and stealing coppers..and both trialed on the 4th Jan 1837

Saunders Smith is noted as Saunders...but the other brother was noted as Henry Smith, so most likely one of the other two brothers...... "Tom or Randle" ( Tom-Thomas Henry Smith or Henry Tom Smith ) or Randle.....being perhaps Randle Henry or Henry Randle Smith ?

But both arriving to then known as VDL Van Diemans Land ( Tasmania ) Penal colony the same time, on the same ship, so i can only supply you with what i can find.

Convict to Australia

Native place ...looks like.....Beadles/Bedles,Somerset.

Saunders Smith was granted a TOL ( Ticket of Leave ) 15th April 1846

Cannot find a marriage for him, but the only clue that may be worth anything, is that Saunders SMITH may have come across to main land Australia, as a there is death in the state of Victoria for a Mary SMITH giving a fathers name of Saunders George Smith.
Which means he may have been also using the name George SMITH ?

Hi Terry.

Sorry i couldnt be more helpful, but if these two brothers did cross over to Mainland Australia, then its possible they ( like many ex-convicts ) changed their names, and dissapeared into the surrounding landscape.

Many records are also missing from early Australian archives unfortunatley, and many are not complete.

Hi Tony
Thanks for the offer.
I do a bit of research on a local site (eaton bray .com) and a lady from Australia has posted trying to find how and when an ancestor arrived in Australia.

William Henry Cook or Henry William Cook born Beds/Bucks England c1826.
Possible parents John & Mary Cook. I can't find him on any census so he might have arrived before 1841.

What we do know is that he married Jane Dyson in Sydney in 1851.
Jane was born in Dalham Suffolk England 1831.

Thanks
Bernie

TonyOz Report 20 Oct 2010 23:45

Hi Bernie.

Unfortunatly, i need to know if he was a convict, as my thread is " Can do look ups for Convicts sent to Australia"...to follow up what became of them.

So i would need to know for certain he was transported, as Australia recieved approx 96 William Cook convicts, and approx 15 Henry Cook..... before 1851.

There were no William H. or William Henry....or Henry W. Cook listed as transportee's

His marriage is listed as William H. Cook

DYSON, Jane EM 278186 Marriage
Spouse: COOK, William H
Date: 16th June
Index Year: 1851
Reg Year: 1851
Reg State: New South Wales
Ref Number: V185190 37B
Parish: Sydney, St James', Church of England

Sorry, but without you being able to tell me if he was a convict, then the only option i have........ is to do a blanket search on a William H.Cook...or a Henry W. Cook...transportee which could be any of the 96 plus Convicts ..or none.

There are two trees on Ancestry au....One seen as William Henry Cook and the other as Henry William Cook. Neither has him listed as a convict.

Thanks again Tony, here goes.
David Garlick born Ewelme, Oxford. England 1809. He was in Oxford prison 1841 and was sent to Australia 1842, he had a 7 year sentence for theft and I believe he died out there (my memory is not so good these days).
His parents are David Garlick and Charlotte Hicks. I shall be very grateful if you find this info for me.
