Don't forget Hannah was one of the witnesses at Emma's

I suspect the two Emmas were probably related, maybe Henry and Benjamin were brothers or cousins?

As 1846 Emma would appear to belong to Henry and Rebecca, it seems likely Dec 1841 Emma is Benjamin and Sarah's.

But there's only one way to find out, and that's to send for the birth cert...

I have a print out of the 1861 census with Benjamin Sapsford,52,Sarah 53 ,Mary 16,Rebecca 14. On the 1841 censusBenjamin and Sarah have 2 daughters - Sarah and Hannah. There is a Thomas Rainbird living with them. I wonder if this is the brother of Rebecca Rainbird? But on Emma's marriage cert her father is Benjamin! It's a minefield. So many Emma's born in the same place. But the one I want, I can't find her birth cert. My stepson looked for her once and thought her record had been destroyed.

I know it's not conclusive, but a tree on ancestry has an Emma Sapsford who has a birthdate of 22 Mar 1846, which would tie in with the record below. Her parents are listed as Henry Sapsford and Rebecca Rainbird.

Births Mar 1846 SAPSFORD Emma Dunmow 12 88

That would seem to leave the earlier Dec 1841 birth ref I posted earlier as the likely birth for 'your' Emma, and ties in better with the c1842 birth year which is given in most censuses for her as married woman/widow Emma Bradd..

There is an Emma Sapsford whose birth is registered in Dunmow, the reg district for Hatfield Broad Oak, where Emma was born according to her census records as a married woman, and where Benjamin Sapford lived with his family in the censuses I posted above.

Births Dec 1841 Sapsford Emma Dunmow 12 71

If only we could find Benjamin's family in the 1851 census...

EDIT. Seems there is a 'known problem' with the 1851 census for Hatfield Broad Oak, i.e. it's missing.

Hi Julie,

I can't find Emma with a father called Benjamin [as per the marriage record] in the census. However the 1881 census posted earlier in the thread gives her birthplace as Hatfield B[roa]d Oak c1842, and the 1891 census as Hatfield Heath c1844, and one of the marriage witnesses was a Hannah Sapsford.

There are census records for a Benjamin with daur Hannah in 1841 and the same family in 1861, but I can't find them in 1851 - and I can't help wondering if Emma belongs to them, and would show up on the 1851 census if only we could find it...

census 1841:

Address: Hatfield Heath, Hatfield Broad Oak County: Essex

SAPSFORD, Benjaman M 30 1811 Essex (ag lab)
SAPSFORD, Sarah F 31 1810 Essex
SAPSFORD, Sarah F 10 1831 Essex
SAPSFORD, Hannah F 7 1834 Essex
RAINBIRD, Thomas M 30 1811 Essex

Census 1861:

Address: The Heath, Hatfield Broad Oak County: Essex

SAPSFORD, Benjamin Head Married M 52 1809 Malt Maker Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex
SAPSFORD, Sarah Wife Married F 53 1808 High Laver, Essex
SAPSFORD, Mary Daughter Unmarried F 16 1845 Pupil Teacher Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex
SAPSFORD, Rebecca Daughter Unmarried F 14 1847 Scholar Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex

Hello Terri. I have a George Bradd born Dec 1842 Harlow Essex . He married Emma Sapsford 6 Jun 1868 Hoxton. I have been trying to find Emma's parents for years! There seems to be some confusion about her birth date. Do you have her birth cert? There are two Emma Sapsfords born in Harlow Essex. George's Mother's maiden name is Millicent Housden, Father's name George Bradd, Shoemaker.
George Bradd (son) not sure if he was born 1872 Tottenham. OR Egham, Surrey? He married Eliza Bartlett. He was a coachman working for the Imperial Tobacco company in 1911. It all gets very conbfusing as there are so many George Bradds!
