One of the wedding anniversay sites suggests to go with the theme of elephants!! Not tusks though Cyn.

"The traditional symbol is ivory, a substitute material instead of real ivory would be fine. Maybe you could introduce elephants to your 14th anniversary celebrations!"

Tickets for an African safari out of the question?? To see the ivory in its true form? Day trip to the zoo?

For our 6th anniversary - wood - I did a theme for OH.

Wooden bench for the garden - obvious
Subscription to a magazine - made of paper which comes from wood
Cross pen - to write on the paper which is made from wood
A couple of novels - made from paper, etc

I'm sure you get the idea.

Did something similar one Valentine's with red themed gifts with a similar response.

Needless to say there was a lot of bleach used those days......

Perhaps a theme on the colour ivory?

Back in the late 80s we went to Hong Kong and was asked to bring back an Ivory Buddah for someone.

I would expect it was illegal then too, but we were young and nieve

Had wondered about the colour ivory to be honest....had better shop around tomorrow then!! What a good excuse.


Anyone old enough to remember seeing the fantastic ornaments of ivory chinese carving in antique shops? Soooo intricate and delicate - rather like lace.

Middle child is 16 in April, eldest 21 in the July me 40 in the August and the youngest 13 in the Oct

....and to add insult to injury, middle child has her prom in the June !!

Now thats a set of parties that are going to cost the earth!!!

My ivory necklace is made of tiny intricately carved round beads


and it is so old that it is now creamy yellow


we have quite a lot of Chinese things around our house .... elaborately enamelled vases, one of those embroideries where you see the same picture on both sides .................... they're done with incredibly fine thread, and the girls who did the work used to go blind by the age of 20. And I also have a tiny Buddha that may be made out of ivory


Not that we have been to China (at least not until 3 years ago when OH went) ..................... but OH had to entertain several Chinese visitors to the university over a number of years in the 1980s ............. and they all bring these super gifts!


It is actually quite amazing to invite 4 visitors to your house ..... none of them had more than a couple of words of English, and you don't speak any Chinese. They loved to see a Canadain house, even a little tiny one like ours, and would nod and smile all the time!
