Find Ancestors

Could somebody please help with a marriage that I can't find.

In my tree I have Alice Lacey, born c1886 in Chesham Buckinghamshire.

She was unmarried in 1901 and I can't find her in 1911.

She married a Mr Uzzell - first name unknown - and I would love to know his first name and when they married.

My mother used to talk family a lot and some of the names have stuck in my head and other's not.

I thought the marriage might have been in Buckinghamshire but looks like she left the family area.

Thanks for the census. Once again the spellings have changed on me. It sounds a foreign name but all of the family's christian names are English.

I will change Unknown Uzell in my tree for Thomas Phillip Uezzell.

A tree on Ancestry has Thomas Phillip's parents as Thomas Uezzell (1857-), born Watford and Adelaide Hyams (1851-), born Spitalfields, London.

This is their marriage. The original definitely reads Uezzell and not Mezzell.

Address for both was 43 Collingwood St. He was a baker. His father was a master baker and hers was deceased. He signed his own name Uezzell. Witnesses were Philip and Kate Abrahams.

Thanks for the info. It is very confusing when the names have different spellings - how do you find the references? It seems to be beyond me!

Both Uezzell and Hyams are names that I haven't come across before. With the witnesses being Abrahams, there is almost a Jewish sound to the names, but the marriages were in churches so not probable.

One mystery solved - another one emerges!

I came across this reference on the internet to the writer of "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie"

......Stannard concludes that Spark’s mother Cissie probably was Jewish. Cissie’s own mother Adelaide’s maiden name was Hyams. Adelaide’s sister had married the son of a “Jewish minister” in Edinburgh, “the senior religious figure in the city before there was a rabbi”. Adelaide Hyams herself was three months pregnant when she married Tom Uezzell, a gentile, in St Bartholomew's Parish Church, Bethnal Green, in 1886 – which, Stannard says, could be explained by the fact that “a Jewish girl falling pregnant by a Christian would not have been able to marry in a synagogue unless the father of her child converted”. Tom did not wish to do so, and thus the family legend of the non-Jewish Uezzells, so important to Cissie’s daughter, was born. Nothing trumped her Scottishness, however, as may be judged by her comment on Robin’s Orthodoxy: “I can’t go along with it. It’s very difficult, first of all, to produce meals”.

It looks as though I have a famous very distant relative!

My Great Aunt was Adelaide Hyams, Sister of David. My Mother was Rose Olive, Daughter of David and Eliza Hyams.
