No this is the problem, I only know his name and occupation from his daughter's marriage certificate, which is also how I know he has died by 1894.

His daughter Minnie eludes me also (previous thread about her), as she was born in Shanghai, and we dont know who her mother was, if she was half chinese (a tit bit of information that came from a very elderly relative last year but the first any of us had heard of this, so taking with a pinch of salt), or if she had any siblings and despite the best efforts of a number of people on here, we have not been able to trace a birth registration for her.

By finding her father's details as posted here on her marriage certificate, I thought I might be able to find out more about her parents.

Thanks again, you have provided a little more for me to go on

The reason I plumped for Thomas as Andrew nelson's wife's maiden name is because Minnie appears in 1891 in Wales in the house of Mary Thomas who is listed as her Aunt, I know all of Mary's sisters and brother's so she can only be an aunt through marriage, although it could also be a transcription error as she had 5 neices in the house as well, so the transcriber may have simply put Minnie down as a niece in error.

Thanks

Vicki

Ohh Flick, thats a strong possibility, I will now go searching to see if Elizabeth Thomas had a brother called William, this could be a big breakthrough, thank you so much. Would there be a marriage certificate or parish records for this marriage do you know?

Many thanks again, you have made my day! (sad I know but when you have spent hours searching and with no clues, something like this is brilliant).

Is the only info you have about him taken from his daughter's marriage cert?

Or do you have her birth cert?

Incidentally, there is no reason to assume he was around in Shanghai when his daughter was born - unless he registered the birth.

Not NORTH Wales.......but, is this perhaps relevant?

Hi

Can anyone help me please, I am trying to locate an Andrew Nelson, but I have very limited information. All I know is he was called Andrew Nelson and was a master mariner, he was in Shanghai around 1873 as that is where his daughter was born, and he had died by 1894.

Not much to go on I know, does anyone have any ideas of how I might be able to search for him / narrow my search down?

There is a slight possibilitiy his family MAY have origiinated from North Wales, and his wife had a maiden name of Thomas, but this is sheer guesswork.

Many thanks in advance
