Today I emailed 2 separate people who had posted on the Geddington Village message board.
Their queries related to the origins of the Lyon Yard in Wood Street Geddington, and to the family of Thomas Lyon.

When we visited Wellingborough a few years ago (from Canada) and dropped in on a church service, I believe the guest lecturer was the Bishop of Peterborough, so that sounds about right. ;)

I dont have the Thomas Lion married 1750 to Elizabeth Whithead in my tree.
He could be the nephew of my John.

Yes I am recalling John Lyon *of Kettering* and Sarah both Buried in Cranford St John church yard 1757 and 1775 . After marrying in Newton they resided in Cranford St John.

Yes, I have found that many from Cranford were registered under Kettering because that was the main parish centre. Kettering covered all of these little villages, even Geddington and Newton in the willows. I dont think Geddington had a church of its own until about 20years later. But there was a nonconformist chapel there later, and a Lyon family is registered with it. but not the one I think. Since This John got married in church of England.

I think the heirarchy goes Peterborough, Kettering, village
So it gets a bit annoying.

Just checking, you're recalling

John Lyon *of Kettering* to Sarah Holmes of Kettering 21 apr 1720 Newton-le-Willows

If you want to send me an email address I'll send you the L lists. ;)

Somewhere I have printed off a list of Geddington marriages from Free. Reg

I think I will have to revisit this and try again to connect. But from memory I know I couldnt link John 1695 to any of these parents.

Cant see anyone else who has looked into this family either.

I was thinking the same thing about Geddington. So let's see what that gets us.

William MOLTEN otp, Elizabeth LYON otp, 13 jun 1735, Geddington

(Just for info I note that a King of Geddington and a Ladson of Geddington married in Newton-le-Willows in 1725, so there's another proximity indication.)

No other relevant female marriages.

Robert LYON of Geddington, Elizabeth BATES otp, 21 Dec 1710, Cottingham

Thomas LYON no parish shown, Martha HARVEY of Geddington, 25 Mar 1722, Little Oakley

Did you have this one? --

Thomas LION, no parish shown, Eliz WHITEHEAD, no parish shown, 31 Aug 1750, Cranford St Andrews BTs
(probably completely irrelevant, you just mentioned Crnaford somewhere)

No other relevant male marriages.

Thanks Janey
the thing is, I'm trying to connect John Lyon, who married Sarah Holmes in Newton in the Willows 1720 to any others.

ie. I'm trying to find his siblings and hopefully his parents.
as all these ones who married in Newton in the Willows say their abode is Geddington
The family must have came from there?

But I just cant find the link yet.

Kettering has always been in Northamptonshire, don't think it's even close to Lancashire! (My grandmother's families are from Wellingborough area.)

I have Northamptonshire marriages pre-1837 parish records. Can't tell on a quick skim whether anything there would still help you. Let me know if so! Checking what I have is a bit of a production so just spell it out for me.

Just taking a quick look, first off I see David to Sarah Anderson 1734-5 that you have.

John Lyon of Kettering to Sarah Holmes of Kettering 21 apr 1720 Newton-le-Willows

No male Lion marriages there, also no Lynn/Lynne or Lyne, so you seem to have what there is.

For brides, Dinah, Sarah and Susanna, the ones you have. No Lion or Lynn etc.

In fact for all the brides with surname L in parish registers pre-1837, likely about 4500-5000 per my rough guestimate of this file, there were only about 6 who married in Newton-le-Willows. Small town. ;)

I am presently reviewing all the info that I have in respect of the Australian born Lyon.
Going over it and looking for other connections.

Starting again and going through all the parental records.

Having gone up the tree on the one branch, I am now looking into the branch of the youngest sibling and working my way back up from there, hoping to glean more info about the first family.
Is my thought of adding a leaf, and working backwards from that person a reasonable way to pursue the information that is lacking from my branch?

Dear Chris
Thank you for this info about Lancashire being a bit far north.
Im not sure at all of the geography even though I look on "ancient maps"

if you could
refer back to my post of the 17th November on this thread, you can see that I have already been in contact with this NFH member, number 372, who has been most helpful recently pointing me to the correctness of the Marriage at Newton in the Willows 1720.

Not sure if the Member on this link researching the name Lyon is you, if not might be of help,

Think Lancashire would be a bit too far North, google brings up a lot of history.

Chris :)
