My husbands grandfather James William Gardiner was born in Portsmouth about 1865. His father William James was a publican. We can find no trace of him before 1901. when he lived in Colchester. Neither of them are on any earlier census. Could anybody, maybe from Portsmouth help us.

Could the dad actually have been a James William too?
