Hi again,

I need some help and/ or advice please re obtaining any other military records about my GGrandfather Patrick and his brother Thomas. I know Patrick enlisted in the British navy but it also seems that he was in the British armed forces as well. I don't know whether this was common. I have just received a copy of his discharge papers and have posted the details above.
Any help would be great, thanks.

Hi all,

i'm after receiving more info re my GGrandfather Patrick Woods b.1889 in Dublin and could do with some help and/ or advice please re obtaining any other military records about him. I know he enlisted in the British navy but it also seems that he was in the British armed forces as well. I have just received a copy of his discharge papers. I can make out the following details:
Number 3825.
Rank - private.
Corps from which discharge - Leinster Regiment, Enlisted - Navan (Co. Meath, Ireland) 6th Jan 1909.
1914-1915 Star medal
British War medal
Victory medal
After having served: with colours 3yrs 22 days

The date on the discharge papers is 24th April 1929.

My great Uncle remembers seeing a photo of Patrick and his brother Thomas Woods both in uniform on board a naval ship, apparently serving together!

Thanks in advance,
Patrick

Hi Eringobrath1916,

merry xams and thanks again for all the help. I remember a great uncle of mine commenting years ago about ages not adding up re sarah mcgovern when he was looking into the woods family, unfortunately my great uncle's family have no idea where his research results have gone! The baptisms you have found for esther, thomas and mary alice match names that i was told about but i knew nothing about these ancestors. Re patrick joseph woods b.1878, i think there is a strong possibility that he may have died and another son, my greatgrandfather b.1889, was named after the dead boy. What site did you use to find the above baptisms?

Thanks again,
Patrick.

Patrick....Have looked at the Census and the Church records the Census has a great age discrepancy...(20 years) for Sarah ....and some of the children of a Patrick Woods and Sarah McGovern b Dublin just dont add up with the ages on the Census...assuming that is there was not more than one Patrick Woods marrying a Sarah Mc Govern...Have you checked out these from the Church Records...Cannot find a Michael birth so far ......

Thanks mel and Maura. Was hoping that Ancestry, Find My Past etc would have naval WW1 records to access online. I'll take a look at that roscommon site.

Think you have to get in touch with Kew for naval records. Someone was going and looked up my grandfather for me.

Hi there,

i've just found some new info on Patrick Woods born 18th oct 1889 from his former employment records. It says that he was in the navy and that he was 'demobilised' 19/6/19. Underneath this it says Mediterranean. There are no rank/ identification numbers noted. Thanks,
Patrick.

Thanks for looking. There are no Margarets nor Johannas on this side of my tree. but there are plenty of Michaels' and Patricks. I suppose i'll have to send away for a search for the two births you found. Think it still costs about four euro each.

Thanks for that Mel. I had no idea what part of Limerick Patrick was from. He was my GGGrandfather. You're correct about Patrick and Sarah having a son Thomas. He died circa 1918 leaving a widow named Elizabeth and two children behind, Alice and Thomas. Elizabeth married Thomas' brother Patrick (b.1889) in 1919!!
Any chance you could find a birth record like the one above for Sarah McGovern. I have no idea who her parents were.

Thanks again,
Patrick.

Woods Thomas 8 Male Son R C Dublin City
Woods Patrick 12 Male Son R C Dublin City

Patrick snr has died before the 1911 census:
Residents of a house 31.5 in Constitution Hill, West Side (Arran Quay, Dublin)
Woods Sarah 60 Female Head of Family Roman Catholic Co Roscommon - Read - Widow - - - -
Woods Michael 30 Male Son Roman Catholic Dublin City Carpenter Read and write - Married - - - -
