My g grandmother Abigail Kelly (born 25/1/1895, Clydebank, Scotland) is daughter to Henry Kelly & Catherine Mellon. I believe they were born around 1870 but have no idea where? Through Abigail's birth cert I can see they married November 1st 1889 Camlachie, Glasgow and I think that Henry's parents could have been a Hugh Kelly & Abigail Sturgeon? I am struggling to get much more info, I don't know if the Kelly's came from Ireland?

Any help would be appreciated!

You could download the marriage cert from Scotlands people website for fully accurate info

Scottish marriage certificates give the names of the bride and groom's parents including the mothers' maiden surname. As Flick has said if you download that you will find the information that you want.

Catherine's birth certificate will also give you the date and place of her parents marriage - even if it was in Ireland.

Possible for Catherine?? Her marriage certificate will confirm the parents names.

Perhaps this for Abigail - there is a marriage in Glasgow in 1865 for an Abbey Sturgeon to a Hugh Kelly? You really need to spen £6 on Scotlandspeople - if you are careful that should get you

Looks like the Peggy Sturgeon that Hugh and Abigail are with in 1871 is actually Abigail's mother Margaret.

That looks interesting, I wouldn't have linked Margaret to Peggy before!

Peggie, Peggy, Meg, Maggie, Rita, Greta and more are fairly common pet names for Margaret - in Scotland anyway.

Sorry, I meant to add that Statutory Registration didn't begin in Scotland until1855. Although Margaret / Peggie Sturgeon was born in Ireland she died in Scotland after 1855 so you should be able to get her death on Scotlandspeople. Scottish death entries give the names of the parents including the mother's maiden surname if the informant knew the details. So with a bit of luck that should take you back yet another generation!

Does that suggest she had 2 children to 2 other people???

Well, I am not totally convinced of that. I would want further proof as the original (which you can view at Scotlandspeople) may just have them recorded as grandchildren of John and Margaret.

If you look at the 1851 census there is a Jean Sturgeon, Granddaughter living with them who may be the daughter of Mary. It is possible though, that Mary wasn't the oldest child of John and Margaret. These children may be the the children of older siblings of Abigail and Mary.

If you look on Scotlandspeople for these births there may be an RCE in the lefthand margin if no father is named on the birth certificates. The mother may have raised an action to prove paternity.

I can't see John or Alexander on later census at the moment. it is possible that Mary married and Alexander took her husband's surname. it is also possible that neither of the boys survived infancy. John in particular may not have survived as Abigail name her first son with Hugh as John. you could look on SP for deaths for the boys.

That would make sense, will look into it! I'm overwelmed by the amount of info here! Thanks!
