i know its a big ask,but where would i look for details of adoption? the reason i ask is that my maternal grandad, eli evans b.8th apr 1894,married jane ellen(was told she was born in wales)b.1894 too. she was married to charles anderson,a soldier, who was killed. she then went on to marry my grandad eli. the problem is,apart from knowing her maiden name was grffith(my aunty says it griffith not griffithS),i am unable to look back any further. this is so annoying,as i have gone back (with help from here!)to 1835 on my paternal side

Official adoption started, I believe, in 1927.

What makes you wonder about her being adopted? Do you have the marriage certificate for Eli and Jane?

Tina

Tina Report 26 Mar 2011 16:24

As I believe it, there was no formal adoption before arround 1928. Before then adoptions could be privately arranged, often within families, with no formal record being made.

What sort of date were you thinking of?

no marriage cert, sorry. my aunty(their eldest daughter)told me her mother was adopted,so i don't know if griffith is her natural name or her adopted name...she said she was born in meadow st,but doesnt know wot part of wales it was. she would have been adopted well before 1928...my aunts were born in 1922 and 1923 and mi mum was born in 1925

You don't say the area that they lived in following the marriage. Could this be the marriage of Eli and Jane? Leigh is on the edge of Manchester

Surname First name(s) Spouse District Vol Page
Marriages Mar 1917 (>99%)
ANDERSON Jane E Evans Leigh 8c 284
Evans Eli Anderson Leigh 8c 284

Where do you think they were married and would she not have married your grandad under her previous married name of Anderson and probably after 1915 on All England & Wales, Marriage Index: 1916-2005

K

K Report 26 Mar 2011 18:09

The marriage record is from FreeBMD site. I cannot see a previous marriage to Charles Anderson at the moment.

You would need to buy the certificate from the General Record Office online for £9.25 to see the detials

There is this marriage in1910 from Ancestry, but I can't see a husband at the moment - Edit looked at all those married in the District in that quarter and there is no Anderson

Name: Jane E Griffiths
Year of Registration: 1910
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Llanrwst
County: Caernarvonshire, Denbighshire
Volume: 11b

well its welsh! a good start...and the initials correct--she was jane ellen. so she only have been 16 yrs of age then when she first married. wonder if mi aunty was mistaken...is anderson a christian name too? anderson charles? or even charles anderton?

K

K Report 26 Mar 2011 18:34

Try the Anderson and Evans marriage first then see if it confirms her original maiden name was Griffiths and if detials of a father are given

hi K,thnx for the start....found the griffiths family--mother,father and 7 children(inc.jane e. b.1894) on the 2011 census, living glamorganshire. only thing i couldn't understand...if she did indeed marry in 1910,why was she still at home on the 1911 census? can't find anything about the marriage of her to charles e kelly.wigan. i rang my 88 yr old aunt and asked if she was def. sure mi grandma was adopted....she said she was maybe fostered. understandable really when there were 7 kids in the house!

Always try free BMD first :-)
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

And it is there, as has been given to you.

Now please send for the marriage certificate. Then we can proceed further.

she also said charles anderson was in inniskillen regiment(?)...app. his medals were passed down to her,as the eldest child, and she passed them onto the regiment

One step at a time, certificate first :-)

K noted this marriage:

Marriages Mar 1915
Anderson Charles E Kelly Wigan 8c 142
Kelly Jane E Anderson Wigan 8c 142

and this WWI death seems to match -- Charles E Anderson of Wigan -- and matches the info about Elaine's Charles Anderson's regiment:

http://www.cwgc.org/debt_of_honour.asp?menuid=14
http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=62038

Name: ANDERSON, CHARLES EDWARD
Initials: C E
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers
Unit Text: 7th Bn.
Age: 25
Date of Death: 03/04/1916
Service No: 25412
Additional information:
Son of James and Winifred Anderson, of 64, Lily Lane, Platt Bridge, Wigan.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: III. G. 14.
Cemetery: BETHUNE TOWN CEMETERY

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 26 Mar 2011 22:11

a possible birth to that marriage:

Births Jun 1915
Anderson James E (mother) Kelly Wigan 8c 170

unfortunately died in infancy:

Deaths Dec 1915
Anderson James E (age) 0 Wigan 8c 91

So it would seem the Kelly who married Anderson had birth surname Kelly -- unless that was her "adoptive" surname, and she was born Griffith?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 26 Mar 2011 22:16

Flick's question is an important one -- what does your mother's birth record say her mother's birth surname was?

If you don't want to give out your mum's personal info (like name and date of birth), which is perfectly fine, can you find her birth at FreeBMD (you know her name and year of birth) and tell us what the mother's surname shown is?

There seems to be no Evans-Griffith birth outside of Wales 1917-1930.

There are Evans-Kelly births in Lancashire during that time period, but there are also several other Evans-Kelly marriages there.

just ploughed thro thousands! of marriages in all churches in atherton...found marriage of eli and jane ellen. however it shows that the family i found in wales is wrong.:-( cos it gave the name of the brides father asWILLIAM griffiths,collier..and not thomas as i thought. looks as tho the kelly link might not be ours,if charles anderson died in 1916. jane ellen and eli married in 1917..having met when she was a tram conductor(widow)
