In the FreeBMD format, the mother/spouse's surname comes after the surname and given name.

If you actually do the search at FreeBMD, you'll see that it's in column format and easy to understand, it's just that the formatting doesn't transfer to this board.

I looked for a childhood death for the Eileen L McCarthy with mother Tracey but didn't see one. Ditto for Denis.

Thanks once again, it'll be great to tell my uncle what you managed to uncover and I've everything crossed for Eileen. Even to be able to pass on the info about his granparents is great. Do you think there may be other siblings...I'm assuming you'd have found them particulary with a mother's maiden name of TRACEY and I'm still a bit perplexed as to where Dennis is. Will post the witness details tommorrow.

GlitterBaby Report 8 Apr 2011 22:58

FMP has a migration record of a Denis Joseph b1926 going to Canada in 1953 but I do not have the right sub to view the details

Lynsey

Lynsey Report 8 Apr 2011 23:02

Unless Denis wasn't a 'real' uncle. The comment about him looking like Uncle Dennis was taken to be a sarcastic comment and aimed at suggesting goodness knows what about my Uncle's mum?! Need to double check that and who made the comment/when. In the same respect Ann could've been a family friend or even a spouse of Uncle Denis (need to check the witnesses). Surely John couldn't have had only one elder sibling in Eileen?!

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Apr 2011 23:04

Oh no, Denis came here and entered the black hole.

I'd say that's quite a good bet for him travelling.

Lynsey -- records for anytime after 1953 are not accessible in Canada because of privacy laws. Births are closed for 100 years, and it's standard for marriages to be 85 years and deaths 75 years, although some provinces are shorter. Only about half of provinces have records on line anyway.

Google and the telephone directory are about what you're left with. He was a little young to be in WWI and thus the Legion, but I checked and there's no death notice in Last Post.

Lynsey Report 8 Apr 2011 23:07

Could anyone find the birth of Denis Joseph with mother's maiden name given as TRACEY?! It'd be lovely to think Denis was his real uncle and left to go to Canada...am I just too suspicious?! What is FMP...never needed to use and what sub is required. What info would it yield...apologies for my ignorance!

Name: Denis J Mccarthy
[details deleted]

Copy it off -- we don't generally put the details of possibly living people here, so I'll delete it once you've got it.

We ain't going to find it as Tracey, because the index (I checked the image) says Tracy. That kind of variation isn't too unusual.

Lynsey Report 8 Apr 2011 23:13

Thanks for the info about Canada...the privacy laws seem a bit harsh?! I don't mind google and phone directories but Canada is a big place!!!!!!!!!! I'll try and find out what Denis may have done for a living, travelling sounds really possible. John McCARTHY was a flight sergeant during WWII and upon leaving took up a position at the Midlands Aero Club at what is now Birmingham International Airport as an instructor hence the connection to Birmingham. He's buried there with no others in the grave and died as a result of the injuries he received in the crash.

Edit your subject line to say

FMP lookup please

(you can take his birthdate out now, we're well underway). Then add to your first post that the details are on page 2.

Someone with the right sub will come along.

We like our privacy laws here, ta. ;)

I've been googling, and the best possibility (not good though it is) is a person by the same name low living in Ottawa (Denis J McCarthy appears in a United Way report). Possibly a son given the same name ... very likely a totally unrelated person ...

www.unitedwayottawa.ca/downloads/LGbooklet.pdf

-- it's just the name in a list.

Use www.google.ca and then once you have search results, select "Pages from Canada" on the left and stick with that.

Not that he might not have left again ... ;)

Ah -- so he was likely travelling on business (that DJMcM, anyway), and not emigrating ...

Here in Canada it's 6:30 pm after another week laden in work, and I'm heading home shortly (one of the last episodes of The Royal tonight in rerun that we missed in the fall). I'll delete the birth record tomorrow. A good Friday night to all!

Lynsey

Lynsey Report 8 Apr 2011 23:34

We're not too far away from where The Royal was filmed and my son was asking if we could go there again soon !!!! Thank you ever so much for your help (and to the other posters)....it's 23.30hrs. here but I'm going to bed very happy. I've printed the birth record for Denis and it's safely in my pile. Kindest regards, Lynsey

This is the death of the husband from one Eileen L McCarthy marriage (Romford 1939).

Name: Donald Norman Shambrook
Birth Date: 17 Oct 1914
Death Registration Month/Year: Jul 1988
Age at death (estimated): 73
Registration district: Peterborough
Inferred County: Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire
Volume: 9
Page: 979

I am absolutely blamed if I can find the wife half of the couple dying or remarrying.

There is one birth to the marriage, marvellous unique name, in 1942. ... and I can't find her marrying or dying either.

However -- she is in two trees here at GR. That being the case: search trees for the name [edited out]. (I'll delete that tomorrow too.)

Lynsey

Lynsey Report 9 Apr 2011 00:23

Thanks, will make contact with the tree owners. Think i've found two Denis McCARTHY living together not far from the accident location and a telephone number too!!!!!!

Hi, I'm no further forward trying to locate Dennis Joseph McCARTHY bn. 1926 Hackney, London or any of his descendants. Really need a marriage for him but have no idea where he went. Parents are Patrick Joseph McCARTHY and Elizabeth Isabel McCARTHY (nee TRACEY). Have tried looking for other siblings of him as have confirmed John Stephen bd 31/12/1920 and Eileen L McCARTHY bn 1914 (big gaps between the three known children). Can anyone help further please?!!!!

JaneyCanuck Report 9 Apr 2011 20:01

There doesn't seem to be much more anyone can do to help, Lynsey.

As I think has been recommended -- get the birth certificates for Eileen and Denis so you have (a) their full names, and (b) their exact birthdates. These are needed to identify deaths in England/Wales after 1969.

Do you actually know that your Denis J was Denis Joseph, or are you assuming that yours was the person who travelled to Canada?

I might also get the death certificates for Elizabeth I McCarthy (almost certain) and Patrick J McCarthy (a good bet) that I posted on page 1. There could be information (a family member as informant) that would be useful.

Births Mar 1886
MCCARTHY Patrick Joseph London O. 1c 6

At FreeBMD the district is in italics because there's a mistake somewhere -- obviously it should be London C (City), which it is on the original (I read the clear image at Ancestry).

Name: Patrick Joseph McCarthy
Year of Registration: 1886
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: London City
County: Greater London, London, Middlesex
Volume: 1c
Page: 6

(I don't know why Ancestry has the right info, since it gets its info pre-1915 from FreeBMD.)

You could use the practice. ;) Submit a correction to FreeBMD, and also attach a postem saying you would like info, did he marry Elizabeth Tracey, looking for descendants. Put the same postem on her birth record, on their marriage record, the children's births and marriages ... . You're limited in the size of postems, but you can just add two if necessary. Include an email address since that's the only way to make contact through FreeBMD. I always recommend getting an anonymous permanent online account like at gmail for this purpose.

That said, there are multiple Patrick Joseph / Joseph Patrick etc. McCarthys in the deaths index who could be your person.
