If nothing else, it should enable us to follow back on Sarah and see if we can definately link up with the Martha you found.

Whatever info it gives, I am sure it will be useful to either prove a connection or discount some possibles.

Just a way out thought but as everyone else is having them.... I have found a marriage of Martha Briggs ref Halifax 9a 487 June qtr 1852. This wouldn't be before Alice's birth but it would be before George's birth in 1853. When I have looked for the possible partner there are only 4 names when there is usually an odd number of potential spouses. Could Martha have come back 'home' to Rastrick which comes under Halifax and married someone, whose name is missing off freebmd. ...then gone back to Nottingham. -jl

This afternoon i'll order Alice's marriage cert, it was only a couple of years before Georges but i'd be interested to see what she has put and who her witnesses were..... wish we could download the info straight away - i hate waiting :o)

But, I can't see them on a census, nothing is jumping out at me at all.........

They married in the 1/4 before Alice's birth !!!

I am off for another look but I am not optimistic about finding anything!

I would be tempted to buy that marriage cert for James Denton and Sarah Briggs. I know it is James + Martha we really want but it looks to me like they didn't actually marry.

James + Sarah DO 'seem' to be connected in some way so the details on there might just help us to find 'your' James + Martha?

Yes, I saw that, it would mean though that she was about 7 months pregnant then - Alice was registered in Nottingham with a birth of 4th June.

I dont know now although girls have always been good at hiding pregnancies if they want so it's possible i suppose ?

I have been looking on and off all day for a Sarah with a sister Martha !!

I've found a Martha Briggs in Rastrick - 5.5 miles from kirkheaton

And....... she has a sister SARAH - from initial searches looks like it could be the Sarah who married James (thomas's brother)

And....... their parents were SHOP KEEPERS !!

It's struck me as strange that on G & A's birth certs James is a labourer yet on G's marriage cert he's supposed to be a Shop Keeper

Could he of been remembering wrongly something he was told by his mum when he was young if James wasn't on the scene and that was his mum's death (Martha Briggs) Nottingham 1859 ???

What does anyone think ? Am I clutching at straws ??

I have just registered with Huddersfield family history society, posted a thread and also brought a book - Kirkheaton buriels, hopefully it might give me what I'm looking for on the missing James cheaper than ordering the cert - fingers crossed X

You could check out their website, one of their booklets might hold the key.
