Hi there Elaine

I am the granddaughter of Florence Meadows born 13 Oct 1897, died 16 Jul 1951 who married James Corr on 30 Oct 1920.
Florence was the daughter of Bridget Mary McCabe/Meadows/White who married William Meadows 12/9/1891 and John White 6/10/1906.
Bridget's parents were Michael McCabe and Margaret Griffin who were married 18/11/154 and probably came from Galway in Ireland. I have copies of all certificates for the dates mentioned.

As Granny White, as she was known died 16 May 1955, I do not recall meeting her but I still have one Aunt who remembers her and her last husband John White.

Are you still researching the family? I too have a picture of Granny White with her daughters, she must have been in her 70-80s, she does look like the cartoon Granny in Giles.
Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi

Yes they are in the 1861 census in HLS. Do you think Michael will have been Irish - I can't find him as having been born in HLHole in 1851 or 41 census - all Michael McCabes of right age Irish.

Thanks for help.

Eringobragh1916 Report 6 Aug 2011 19:29

Elaine...Just for ref 1881

Working with the 1881 Census (Ncle)...Michael Mary and James all came from over the water in Durham area....

From 1859 onwards they were in Houghton Le Spring area....all the following are children born to the couple Michael McCabe and Mary Anderson)

James. Bapt. 31 Dec1859...St Michaels ...(This James may have died)

James Edward. 11 Sept.1861...St Michaels

Ellen Dec 1864...St. Cuthberts Durham..there is a death of an Ellen listed aged 1yr..(Hetton)

Mary Ellen born 26 April 1867 St Michaels

So you should find the couple on 1861 Census..H-L-S

She and William have the same address - colliery cottages Hetton Colliery. But in the 1891 census William is living in Pelton with his sister, Lucy Surtees, and widowed mother.Bridget(Known as Mary) is living in Pelton where she was a barmaid in a pub.

Elaine Report 6 Aug 2011 18:35

Sorry Eringobragh1916 - I was answering a question from Mary who had found Jennie McCabe's marriage to Thomas Latcham. I assumed you could see that post as well as your own. I'm new to posting and not sure how it works.

The name on the marriage certificate of Bridget Mary's father is Michael McCabe.

Have done some more work today and the only Michael McCabes I can find are born in Ireland - although one is living in Hetton in 1851 with parents Patrick and Brdget and brother Thomas. I think Bridget Mary's father was Irish.

Elaine...I am totally lost here...dont know why you keep jumping here there and everywhere..
Where do the Latchams come from...?
You still havent answered the question about Bridget's fathers name...or Census H.Hold 1891

Going back to the Michael McCabe with wife Ann...if you notice he has a son named Michael aged 10 b Lemington.....

Here he is ...

Name: Michael Mccabe
Gender: Male
Baptism/Christening Date: 29 Mar 1880
Baptism/Christening Place: Bell's Close, Northumberland, England

Father's Name: Michaelis Mccabe

Mother's Name: Mariae Anderson

Elaine Report 5 Aug 2011 20:09

Yes that's right - as soon as I said the name my mum recognised it and said she had a son called Kit Latcham (Kitchener) - who was only a few years older than my mam (she was born in 1922).

I'll check the birth of Jane McCabe - in the 1901 census Jennie says she is 15 which would indicate 1884/85

Thanks

Thanks - I am getting myself confused - need to map all this out on a bit of paper so I can see it together and plan next moves and check against certificates.
Have tried BMD - not found Gommer, Ruth (either) or Jenny!

Marriage for Michael McCabe and Ann Jones in Lanchester which might explain the name and age change.

Still puzzled as to why Michael doesn't appear before 1881 - unless he came from ireland which is where all with his name and approx date of birth say they came from before 1881.

Kind regards

Elaine Report 5 Aug 2011 18:56

Hi

Yes - there is no Michael McCabe with the same family
Francis Peter must have died - we have never heard of him at all.
Elaine

Eringobragh1916

Eringobragh1916 Report 5 Aug 2011 18:49

He was a son to Brid Mary McCabe Meadows and Wm.
Baptised 17 Sept.1900.

Name: Franciscus Petrus Meadows
Gender: Male
Baptism/Christening Date: 17 Sep 1900

Baptism/Christening Place: St. Joseph's, Stanley (near Beamish), Durham,

Father's Name: Gulielmi Meadows

Mother's Name: Birgittae Mccabe Meadows

The Meadows (snr) were in Chester-le-St from 1901

Have you checked out the 1891 Census for Ncle St Andrews..?
I dont have access...Jane should be on that.

Eringobragh1916 Report 5 Aug 2011 18:18

Elaine....

Have you not got Bridget M ary's MC...???
What is her father's name..?

The Michael McCabe (1881) married to Mary Anderson were living in Ncle with 3 of their 4 children b Ncle.
There is a large gap between the births of James and Ann...could be some of the children were still working/had died.
There was def.a Jane b 1874 (Ncle) to the couple....
She is on 1891 Ncle St Andrews.
Michael could well have remarried...
Have you searched for a Death of Mary Anderson McCabe..?

Initially I agreed about the naming pattern of the children but what Christian names have you a problem with...?
Incidentally "Donald" was actually christened "Michael Donald"
What happened to Francis Peter...?.

Elaine

Elaine Report 5 Aug 2011 17:26

Yes - this is the different family
Wife's name and age have changes
William doesn't appear on 1881 census with them
Gommer doesn't appear on 1881 census with them. Very strange name!
Mary doesn't appear on 1881 census with them
And places of birth have changed.

In earlier censuses the only Michael McCabes I can find born around the right date are bon in Ireland.

I am very confused.

1891 census

Address: 13, Langley Street, Esh, Langley Park

Name Relation Condition Sex Age Birth Year Occupation Disability Where Born

MCCABE, Michael Head Married M 60 1831 Coal Miner Hetton Le Hole Co Durham
MCCABE, Ann Wife Married F 40 1851 Sunnyside Co Durham

MCCABE, Mary Daughter Single F 17 1874 Stanley Co Durham
MCCABE, Ruth Daughter F 8 1883 Scholar Esh Co Durham
MCCABE, Ruth Daughter F 4 1887 Esh Co Durham

the wife is too young to have a son aged 28 so possibly a second marriage

also two daughters called Ruth is this one from each of the previous marriages (or should one be listed as a grandchild?)

or maybe the enumerator mades a mistake and one of these should really be Jennie

or as Bridget prefered her middle name of Mary maybe Jennie was the same, was she really Ruth Jennie

Hi Erinobragh 1916

In fact, in the 1891 census I can't find a good match for the family. There is a Micael McCabe around the same age, born in Hetton but with a differnt wife and some different children - some the same. His first wife could have died and these could be step children of his second wife but still no sign of Jennie who would have been 5 or 6 by then
