His Father's name should be on the marriage certificate, whether he died before the child was born or when his son was 6.

you can follow the instructions on there as to how to buy the marriage certificate.

Once you have found a marriage it says:
'Has our search engine found the record you are seeking?

Just work you way through and apply to the GRO

Hi my great grandfather died in the army im not sure what he was in or where all i know about him was his name was james cole and he was married 2 a elizabeth whithead but he was dead by 1915 elizabeth died 1915 and james died a few years before i know he died when he was in the army but i find it diffcult to understand the death overseas

The most obvious death is for a James Alexander Cole, born Portsmouth, but he did not die until 1916 i.e. after Elizabeth.
You need James and Elizabeth's marriage certificate for age, occupation, where living at time of marriage, Father's name, to help find out where he was born.

ok i know they lived in portsmouth 3 red lions when they married how will i know if i got the right married if i cant find the spouse as they proberly married before 1912 ? and my grandad was born 1910 soz i had it wrong before but its 1910

thanks ive found it and odering it now james cole died befor elizabeth as he not on the 1911 cenus and my uncle knows a bit about his grandfather he said he died before elizabeth but james died in the army he was away when he died training maybe
