Glovers in Appledore

Linda Report 16 Aug 2011 18:15

I have been fairly successful in tracking the family of Thomas Glover (master mariner born Bideford c1816) and Sarah Matthews Coles (born Northam/Appledore 1817) in Appledore but can't find some of them on some censuses. Their eldest child Herbert Ebenezer Glover is my great great grandfather and I've tracked him with no problems (hardly surprising with a name like that!) The other children appear to be
Alfred Coles Glover born 1842,
Lavinia born 1844,
Sarah born 1847,
Emmeline born 1851,
Georgina born 1853,
Henrietta born 1856 and
Catherine Elizabeth (Kate or Katie) born 1863.

My great aunt remembered Sarah, Lavinia, Emmie, Georgina and Hettie but also mentioned a brother John, who I've been unable to verify. I can't find Alfred in either 1861 or 1871, though there is a possible death in 1863.
In 1871 daughter Sarah is in Chapel Row, Appledore with her sisters Georgina (spelt Georgianna) and Henrietta, and Katie is listed as "visitor, daughter" aged 8, visiting someone at 4 Bathurst Parade, Bristol. Very annoyingly, her entry is at the top of the page so I've no idea who she was visiting or if either of her parents were there. I can't find either of them in 1871 - Thomas may well have been at sea, and maybe his wife went with him. Maybe Lavinia and Emmeline were at sea with him too - my great aunt said he used to take some of his daughters with him on voyages.

I have also been unable to track any marriages apart from Emmeline. Great aunt Pollie said that Sarah's husband was Harry and they had 2 daughters Lizzie and ? She also said that Auntie Hetty was a widow with a little son. She also (wrongly) said that Emmy was older than Sarah, and that Emmy had 2 daughters one of whom was Matilda. But her account is quite muddled in places and I've no idea if any of this is correct! The aunt Sarah could in theory be Sarah Kelly (born Appledore 1853), sister of Herbert Ebenezer Glover's wife Maria Kelly, although there wasn't an Emmy in this family!

Any help in sorting out this muddled family would be much appreciated (although I do realise that there are an awful lot of Glovers in Appledore and district!)

cheers, Linda

I think you have put so much detail that it might confuse the question!

Can you tell us what, step by step what it is you want to find?

That's brilliant Ginny!

Sorry if I made things even more confusing!

1871 - can't find parents Thomas and Sarah or daughter Lavinia - maybe they are all at sea (as it were!) Would there be any way I could find this out?

I'm very confused by the Bristol household that Katie is staying with - don't recognise any of the names! I'll have to have a hunt and see if I can link any of them to the Glovers.

Marriages? I haven't found any apart from Emmeline.

Lavinia?

Sarah - my great aunt said her husband was Harry and that there were 2 daughters, one of them Lizzie.

Georgina?

Henrietta (Hetty)? Had a son??

:-)

That would be interesting if it is the right Lavinia - no known connections with N Wales, but there is a drapery connection as her father Thomas became a draper in London when he stopped being a master mariner in Devon and South Wales! Hmm!

There is a connection to Wales as Tempest has found and then this

Yes, I know about the South Wales connection - all my assorted Devon mariners seem to turn up in Cardiff and/or Swansea sooner or later! But I don't know of any connection with North Wales, and if it is the right Lavinia in Denbigh, her place of birth is wrong. Mind you, I have come across wrong birthplaces on other censuses, so they're not always right! :-S

Updating Lavinia Glover.

I finally got her father's death certificate - Herbert Ebenezer Glover, died 23 Nov 1905 Cardiff, death notified by sister L. Hoare of 37 Alexander Terrace, Swansea, present at death. I have now found Lavinia Hoare, born c1844 Appledore, Devon with husband Henry Hoare, tailor, born Landkey, Devon circa 1841 - they are in Swansea in 1881, 1891 and 1901, and FreeBMD has a death for Lavinia Hoare in 1909 Cardiff, aged 64. But I still can't find their marriage. She was unmarried in 1863 when she witnessed Herbert's marriage in Swansea register Office. Any ideas please? Thanks.

Linda

Linda Report 10 Nov 2012 22:06

I've now found son Thomas Henry G Hoare born March quarter 1871 Newport, Monmouthshire, so that narrows the marriage down to 1864 to 1870 (1864 because she was Lavinia Glover on 20 Dec 1863 when she witnessed her brother's marriage.)
