Hi meg, ive checked my dads birth certificate and his parents are James frederick Speller and Eira Onita Gough. At the time of my dads birth being registered they were living at 147 Bedwellty Road Aberbargoed which is the village I still live in.
My dad was born 14th december 1947, he passed away last year.

I have partially bungled this.

Kimberly's father, John Charles Frederick Speller was born 14 December 1947 in Builth. He sadly died last year, and Kimberly I am sorry about this, he was not much older than me. The birth certificate (which Kimberly has) shows his father as James Frederick Speller and mother Eira Onita Gough. His brother Colin was also born in Builth, same parents.

Parents' marriage:

Name: SPELLER, James F
Registration District: Help Bulmer
County: Yorkshire
Year of Registration: 1942
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Spouse's last name: Gough
Volume No: Help 11B
Page No: Help 129

Name: GOUGH, Eira O
Registration District: Bulmer
County: Yorkshire
Year of Registration: 1942
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Spouse's last name: Speller
Volume No: 11B
Page No: 129

Would you believe that despite the uncommon surname there is a Frederick James Speller marrying a Doris Gough in Paddington in 1936. I thought we had got it wrong. This is clearly an irrelevant marriage, and I apologise for holding everyone up.

So it is James Frederick Speller who is Kimberly's grandfather.

Now we are looking for his parents. There are loads of possibles, and I think Kimberly has to get the marriage cert of James Frederick and Eira Onita to narrow down his father - both name and occupation.

There are several James Frederick Spellers born about the right time and unless she has the birth cert of James Frederick Speller or his marriage cert to determine his father we could be shooting in the dark.

Sorry for the delay folks, just wanted to get it right for Kimberly.

This is the marriage info Kimberly.

England & Wales, Marriage Index: 1916-2005
about Eira O Gough Name: Eira O Gough
Spouse Surname: Speller
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1942
Registration district: Builth
Inferred County: Breconshire
Volume Number: 11b
Page Number: 129
Find Spouse: Find Spouse

You need to note the Registration District, the Volume Number and Page Number and go to this site:

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

You will need to register as a new user. It doesn't cost anyhing to register.

Once you get into the GRO system, choose Marriage Cert England an Wales, and lower down where is asks "Is the GRO reference number known" choose Yes. And then enter the year 1942. That will take you to the next screen where you enter the District (Builth), the Volume (11b) and the page (129). I can't remember where it asks you what sort of service you want, but choose Standard, don't go for anything special. I also can't remember where it asks for your postal address.

You'll need to put in your credit card details and pay, and the certificate will be with you in just over a week.

It may not tell us anything stunning, but will confirm that we are on the right lines before we go further on;

Best wishes

Margaret
