Hi,
After some advice if anyone can help. I am looking for birth information on Isaac Porteus who married Paley in Auckland in 1924 and went on to have children who I have the birth certificates for and has confirmed the father as being Isaac Porteus. I have found the mothers birth details who was born in 1905, but there are no birth records for Isaac within a 15 year period of Paleys birth date, could this be due to a overseas birth?? Or is there an area of research I am missing. I have thought about looking at Death records, but I have no idea when this would have been other than that he was living in the Chesterfield area after he had his children and was a Coal Miner. I have no information on his parents so can't search it that way.
I would be pleased for any help anyone can give me. Many thanks

Births Mar 1855 (>99%) Porteous Isaac Ritchie Birmingham 6d 30
Births Mar 1889 (>99%) Porteious Isaac Thompson Cockermouth 10b 512
If you buy the marriage cert. then that will give you his age (so you can work out his date of birth) and his address at the time of marriage. It will also give you his father's name and occupation which may help find him on 1911 census.

Thank you all so much , there are definately some leads here that are worth following up and I will order the marriage certificate. One thing I have found with the name "PORTEUS" is that is can be spelt in a number of ways. I know I have got the correct spelling from the certificates, but on one they have spelt it with an "O" and then crossed it out, could it be that it its spelt differently on some of the records and that maybe I should search under a variety of spellings? Does this happen on records very often?
Thank you all very much for your help it is most appreciated!! :-)

yes you will find perhaps lots of spellings! I have the Warboys surname and have just gone to the villiage of my 1841 census only to find there isn't one record of Warboys they are all Worboys so someome read an O for a A at some point in my line

Spellings are only as good as the clerk, who took the details, could spell. Always look at other forms of spelling with surnames and christian names.
The christening record for Isaac does not show a father's name, so could be that Catherine never married and just noted herself as Widow to avoid the scandal.

Look out for mistranscriptions of the beginning of the name as well. I have a name in my tree that begins with a P and it has been transcribed as beginning with a B and a V!
Sometimes it is better to search without a surname, just using first names and YOB and POB.

Could this be Catherine's parents (all the children are listed as grand-children, b Newcastle); not sure what the wife's name is - very difficult to read:

Wonder if this is Catherine in 1871???
Name: Catherine Portens Age: 13 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1858 Relation: Daughter Father's Name: Isaac Pretews Mother's Name: Catherine Pretews Gender: Female Where born: Middleton, Durham, England Civil parish: Shildon Ecclesiastical parish: Old Shildon Town: Old Shildon County/Island: Durham Country: England Registration district: Auckland Sub-registration district: Bishop Auckland ED, institution, or vessel: 19 Household schedule number: 51 Piece: 4928 Folio: 42 Page Number: 11 Household Members: Name Age Isaac Pretews 36 born: West Hartlepool, Durham - Coal Miner Catherine Pretews 36 Mary Ann Portens 16 Elizabeth Portens 15 Ellen Portens 13 Catherine Portens 13 John James Portens 6
(names on the original does look like Porteus) Correction for Isaac shows:- [Isaac Porteus]
Deaths Sep 1872 (>99%) Porteus John James 8 Auckland 10a 128
...........sometimes an illegitamate child's mother, gave their father's name as the child's father's name on official documents, and here it looks as though she named her son after her own father. But that's just a theory.

The name Porteous comes from Scotland, but like many names that were unusual they ended up being spelt different and some stayed that way

Looks like Elizabeth O'Brien was Catherine Porteous' sister:

All seems to suggest that Catherine was not married.
Best wishes

Thanks everyone, I have confirmed much of the information I was given. I agree that it is likely Cathrine did not marry and gave her chidren her fathers name. I have managed to obtain Isaac Porteus (this is the correct spelling on death certificate) death certificate, he died in 1960 aged 58 years and this confirms the year he was born as 1901-1902 which ties in with the census information you supplied. Based on this information I applied to the GRO for the birth certificate but they can't find a record and have sent me a refund. I am still unable to track down a birth record either, is it possible he may have been born under a different name?
This has got me stumped! Would be pleased for any advice or is the only option to order Isaac's marriage certificate, I have a feeling this will just confirm the year of birth that I have and may not contain a fathers name....would this information be mandatory?
Could it be that Isaac Porteus were adopted?? Not sure this is a possibility as him and his sister Elizabeth were both christened Porteus soon after their birth, I just can't understand why I can't find a birth record for Isaac, yet I can easily find one for the sister Elizabeth.
Kind regards to all ;-)
