K Report 14 Aug 2012 13:19

A search of the 1911 census on FMPast does not bring up a Backchurch St in Auckland.

As she kept her unmarried name and presumably did not marry, could the registrar assumed her partner's surname was Porteous?

Joanne Report 14 Aug 2012 11:53

Still needing help, please.......I have ordered Elizabeth Porteus birth certificate, Isaacs sister and there is no father listed. I have ordered her mother Cathrine Porteus death certificate 1922 and it says she is a widow of Robinson Porteus 7 Backchurch Street, Auckland. I can't find any info on Robinson Porteus? Do you think Robinson would have been a surname? I am not sure how to do a census check on an address. I am baffled!

Kind Regards

Thanks everyone, I have confirmed much of the information I was given. I agree that it is likely Cathrine did not marry and gave her chidren her fathers name. I have managed to obtain Isaac Porteus (this is the correct spelling on death certificate) death certificate, he died in 1960 aged 58 years and this confirms the year he was born as 1901-1902 which ties in with the census information you supplied. Based on this information I applied to the GRO for the birth certificate but they can't find a record and have sent me a refund. I am still unable to track down a birth record either, is it possible he may have been born under a different name?

This has got me stumped! Would be pleased for any advice or is the only option to order Isaac's marriage certificate, I have a feeling this will just confirm the year of birth that I have and may not contain a fathers name....would this information be mandatory?

Could it be that Isaac Porteus were adopted?? Not sure this is a possibility as him and his sister Elizabeth were both christened Porteus soon after their birth, I just can't understand why I can't find a birth record for Isaac, yet I can easily find one for the sister Elizabeth.

Kind regards to all ;-)

Looks like Elizabeth O'Brien was Catherine Porteous' sister:

Mar 1881 vol 10a pg 271
Elizabeth Porteous on the same page as James O'Brien

All seems to suggest that Catherine was not married.

Best wishes

The name Porteous comes from Scotland, but like many names that were unusual they ended up being spelt different and some stayed that way

...........sometimes an illegitamate child's mother, gave their father's name as the child's father's name on official documents, and here it looks as though she named her son after her own father. But that's just a theory.

Could this be Catherine's parents (all the children are listed as grand-children, b Newcastle); not sure what the wife's name is - very difficult to read:

1901 England Census

Name: Isaac Porteous
Age: 40
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1861

Spouse's Name: Earnest Porteous

Civil parish: Elswick
Ecclesiastical parish: St Mary the Virgin

Isaac Porteous 40
Earnest Porteous 49 bScotland
Sarah Bowran 11 - could be Bowman
Jenett Bowran 10
Margt Bowran 4
Dorothy A Bowran 3

Edit - just realised Isaac couldn't be her father - he was born the same year!

Potty

Potty Report 14 Sep 2011 13:02

Look out for mistranscriptions of the beginning of the name as well. I have a name in my tree that begins with a P and it has been transcribed as beginning with a B and a V!

Sometimes it is better to search without a surname, just using first names and YOB and POB.

Catherine

Catherine Report 14 Sep 2011 12:49

Spellings are only as good as the clerk, who took the details, could spell. Always look at other forms of spelling with surnames and christian names.

The christening record for Isaac does not show a father's name, so could be that Catherine never married and just noted herself as Widow to avoid the scandal.

yes you will find perhaps lots of spellings!
I have the Warboys surname and have just gone to the villiage of my 1841 census only to find there isn't one record of Warboys they are all Worboys so someome read an O for a A at some point in my line

Thank you all so much , there are definately some leads here that are worth following up and I will order the marriage certificate. One thing I have found with the name "PORTEUS" is that is can be spelt in a number of ways. I know I have got the correct spelling from the certificates, but on one they have spelt it with an "O" and then crossed it out, could it be that it its spelt differently on some of the records and that maybe I should search under a variety of spellings? Does this happen on records very often?

Thank you all very much for your help it is most appreciated!! :-)
