A search of the 1911 census on FMPast does not bring up a Backchurch St in Auckland. |

Still needing help, please.......I have ordered Elizabeth Porteus birth certificate, Isaacs sister and there is no father listed. I have ordered her mother Cathrine Porteus death certificate 1922 and it says she is a widow of Robinson Porteus 7 Backchurch Street, Auckland. I can't find any info on Robinson Porteus? Do you think Robinson would have been a surname? I am not sure how to do a census check on an address. I am baffled! |

Thanks everyone, I have confirmed much of the information I was given. I agree that it is likely Cathrine did not marry and gave her chidren her fathers name. I have managed to obtain Isaac Porteus (this is the correct spelling on death certificate) death certificate, he died in 1960 aged 58 years and this confirms the year he was born as 1901-1902 which ties in with the census information you supplied. Based on this information I applied to the GRO for the birth certificate but they can't find a record and have sent me a refund. I am still unable to track down a birth record either, is it possible he may have been born under a different name? |

The name Porteous comes from Scotland, but like many names that were unusual they ended up being spelt different and some stayed that way |

Could this be Catherine's parents (all the children are listed as grand-children, b Newcastle); not sure what the wife's name is - very difficult to read: |

Look out for mistranscriptions of the beginning of the name as well. I have a name in my tree that begins with a P and it has been transcribed as beginning with a B and a V! |

Spellings are only as good as the clerk, who took the details, could spell. Always look at other forms of spelling with surnames and christian names. |

Thank you all so much , there are definately some leads here that are worth following up and I will order the marriage certificate. One thing I have found with the name "PORTEUS" is that is can be spelt in a number of ways. I know I have got the correct spelling from the certificates, but on one they have spelt it with an "O" and then crossed it out, could it be that it its spelt differently on some of the records and that maybe I should search under a variety of spellings? Does this happen on records very often? |
