rootgatherer Report 4 Dec 2011 21:38

Personally Lucy, I would take a prinout of this thread (you are probably best to copy and paste it into a word document). Then I would type it into a software programme that would let me printout charts and familygroup records. Start with yourself then add you parents etc working backwards. I would do that before contacting anyone. That way you would have all the relevant names and event dates to hand. You will also be able to see the relationships more clearly.

EDIT

Enie birthplace is more likely to be Ellon in Aberdeenshire. I don't think that there is an Ellow.

Lucy

Lucy Report 4 Dec 2011 21:18

That thread was done a year ago and far to much information made no sense to me. ... could I have a recap on all this recent information I don't know what to do with it or how it connects before I contact people I want to be abe to grasp it myself I don't want to confuse people I'm not on my laptop on my phone I will have the whole evening tomorrow to be on my laptop and do all the above contacting e.t.c :-D

Lucy, if you had told us about this thread it would have given us a good start.

Lucy, if you don't have a software programme to add your family tree to try this free one. It will let you printout clear trees and familygroup records and if you put the people that we have given you (on this thread) starting with yourself you should get a clearer picture of how it all fits together.

Very strang why he would use stephen as his name and not dudley though?

Lucy

Lucy Report 4 Dec 2011 20:47

Thank you Sylvia, yes great teamwork. I feel almost as excited as I did when I finally nailed my Grandfather in law's family. Not sure if OH was pleased or not to find his father had 7 half brothers and sisters he knew nothing about - and certainly his surviving aunt doesn't even want to admit that her father had been married twice. Ah, yes some of them just can't cover their tracks well enough LOL.

Teamwork has worked wonders!

Congratulations everyone!!

If you go to the link I have given you above it may explain why Ruby and Mr. Gordon didn't marry and she went on to marry elswhere. At least that will be one branch of your tree that won't need much research LOL.

You also see why, perhaps Enie would have been born in Aberdeenshire away from the bombings in London.

I don't think that Dudley would have changed his name by deed poll. He had too much to lose.

Lucy

Lucy Report 4 Dec 2011 20:21

Dudley gladstone gordon poped up when I go
t that cenus as well we also thought that birth certificate would be more correct than marriage unless he chaned his forname by depot due to circumstances we don't know between ruby georgina ruby dorothy and emma georgina from readung the letters there was so much hurt especially when ruby dorothy married de becker all cared about cedric carash how he was he was very important in the family the letters were amazing they were from all round the world even during ww2 they were having a great time

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 4 Dec 2011 20:14

If Ruby Georgina Gordon's birth certificate gives her father as Dudley that is more likely to be more truthful than the Stephen given on her marriage certificate.

There are only 4 Dudley Gordon's on the 1911 census. Perhaps someone could look them up. I have to say though that one of them definately has connections to Aberdeenshire. He is already married so that may explain why there is no Gordon / Carash marriage.

HOUSEHOLD GORDON DUDLEY A M 1894 17 Blean Kent
HOUSEHOLD GORDON DUDLEY GLADSTONE M 1884 27 Dartford Kent
HOUSEHOLD GORDON EDWARD DUDLEY M 1909 2 Greenwich London
HOUSEHOLD GORDON GEORGE DUDLEY M 1863 48 Lewes Sussex

EDIT just did the free seach again on the 1911 putting in occupation Engineer. The second one on the list above has an occupation that includes the word "Engineer"

There is a picture of that man here

http://thepeerage.com/p2483.htm#i24830

EDIT

There are no Stephen Gordons on the 1911 census with the word "Engineer" in his occupation.

Lucy

Lucy Report 4 Dec 2011 20:05

I have got ruby gordons birth certificate I posted the details a few pages back her mother was ruby dorothy gordon formally carash and her father was dudley gordon a consulting engineer I have been up my nans sisters norma as she has got loads of documents and letters that mention cedric carashes death arrangments but we found a very intersting factor ruby listed her dad as dudley gordon on birth certicate in 1914 but on her marriage certificate her father was stephen gordon same occupation witness to their marriage was a cedric carash also ruby dorothy was a very wealthy lady and we had lots of letters addresed to ruby georgina from various places around the world as she married gustav de becker who was some sort of a count as in her titles she used baroness we also know that her mum emma and her dud not get on we she married mr caplin as the letters state emma was looked after by ruby georgina my nans mum as the letters always asked about her and appolgied for the relationship break down in any of the documents norma has not once
is a carash mentioned apart from cedric ruby dorothys brother they seemed to be very close the above informatiom has confused me as I am trying to put them in my family tree before contacting other people as I don't know what I'm asking for I have ordered ruby dorothys birth certificate we know the mother is emma just who the father is can I have a recap on the information above so I can fit them in everyone has helped me so much for a begineer it has been overwelming but brillaint to do thank you so much everyone for all the time and effort you have taken I can't begin to say how much I aperciate all the help thank you guys :-D

I hope people notice too Chrissiex as it is always good to know where to find such detail. That's one of the things that I like about these boards - we can all learn sources and techniques from them.

As I said, this one has been a marvelous example of teamwork.

chrissiex Report 4 Dec 2011 18:45

I'm hoping people did see the info from Nova Scotia records that I posted

the 1939 declaration of the 1864 birth for one of the brothers is quite useful I think, for the names of the parents and the family bible the information was recorded in ... and showing that at least one of the brothers did return to Canada ... and all the people here at genesreunited and elsewhere who are descended from that family and have information about them

'My Great Aunt married a Frederick Micklewright. Her name was Elizabeth Eavis. I know she was living in Canada around about 1915 in Halifax Nova Scotia. Contact me if this opens up any research doors for you...we might even be distant cousins?'

the reply is

'Sorry for not replying sooner I have only just read your message, I have looked at some details I have in my tree.
I do have a Frederick Micklewright marrying an Elizabeth. He himself was born in Nova Scotia at the fort there as his father was military in 1865. I know he married Elizabeth who was born in Holloway London in 1869. If this is the same person I have located 2 children Sidney G Born 1896 in Brixton and Eva M 1899 in Northfleet Kent.

this is Kathleen one of the people whose trees I referred to above

Thank you Maureen. I do think that it has all been great teamwork.

I have to say that it the last few minutes I think I may have found a reason for us being unable to find a Gordon / Carash marriage. I have copied what I have found but to avoid information overload for Lucy just now, I'll wait for the details from Ruby Gordon's birth certificate that Lucy has ordered. I do think that I have perhaps found an Aberdeenshire connection for Ruby's family - no great surprise really with a surname like Gordon.

I have mostly enjoyed working on this family although sometimes they have proved difficult to find. Still some loose ends though regarding Henry Thomas Micklewright. I am now thinking that he wasn't dead when Jemima remarried - he had just shot the craw and Jemima had him declared dead after their years of separation. As Emma never married him she was free to marry Mr. Garner anyway in 1906 although she stated that she was widowed.

a member of genesreunited has in their tree

George Micklewright 1867 Nova Scotia

that is the brother of Henry/Harry whose birth record in Nova Scotia I posted above

someone else has

Fred Micklewright 1865 Canada

also the birth declaration I posted above

............ and ............ there four people who have ...............

Harry Micklewright 1859 Nova Scotia, Canada

these are people you want to talk to Lucy !!

they could be descendants of Harry's first marriage to Jemima

or of course they could just be other Mickewright descendants

edit ...... three of those four people also have

Thomas Micklewright 1884 Middlesex, England

in their tree ..... the son of Harry with wife Jemima

and two of them have

Annie Micklewright 1886 Middlesex London
Maud Micklewright 1888 Middlesex London

...... the daughters of Harry with wife Jemima

rootgatherer Report 4 Dec 2011 17:23

Big big thanks to MaurennNY for finding Henry Thomas's mother's maiden surname. I just had a gut feeling that he may have used his morther's maiden surname for his pretend marriage to Emma. I had a great uncle who did the same thing!

Only 2 Micklewrights born Nova Scotia on the 1911

HOUSEHOLD MICKLEWRIGHT CHARLES NORMAN M 1870 41 Wandsworth London
HOUSEHOLD MICKLEWRIGHT GEORGE ALBERT M 1868 43 Wandsworth London

I can't see Jemima Micklewright or Henry Thomas micklewright in the 1901 census. Nor can I find Emma Sheffield / Carash in 1901.

I can't see a death for Henry Thomas Micklewright or Carash born c1859. Can anyone else please? Or can some check to see if he hopped back to Canada?

To summerise

Edie Forder (Lucy's Grandmother) - parents Forder & Ruby Gordon
Ruby Gordon Lucy's Great Grandmother) - parents Ruby Carash, father Gordon
Ruby Carash (Lucy's Great great grandmother)- parents Emma Georgina Sheffield (aka Carash) and Henry Thomas Micklewright (aka Carash)

So Lucy it looks like Emma Georgina Sheffield aka Carash aka Garner aka Caplin and Henry Thomas micklewright aka Carash are your Great great great grandparents.
