Gavin Report 29 Dec 2011 18:15

Hi
I am new to this, I have already added 111 members to my tree for my maternal grandmothers side, now I am keen to trace my family name through my paternal grandfather. His name was James Frederick White (Jim), born in Wallsend, Tyne & Wear in 1914, he married Dorothy Winifred White (same maiden name as married name) in Billingham, Teesside in the late 1940's, they had 3 sons, David (my father), John and James.
Having lost my own father some years ago all of the history has been lost to other members of the family who I no longer see. I am hoping you may be able to help me trace both routes of the 'White's' but I am most keen to follow the paternal side initially.
Many thanks
Gavin White :-)

Hi Gins

Unfortunately not, they were all given to my uncles when my father died, I no longer see them to get the information.

I have some history for my paternal grandmother (his wife) Dorothy Winifred White, 1920-1992.
She had 2 sisters;
Gertrude Francis White (Trudy) 08th Oct 1913 (Dunfermline, Fife) - 23rd Dec 2007 (Billingham, Teesside)
Lilian Francis White who only lived for 10 yrs approx 1920-1930.

Their parents were;
Charles Wallace White, 1898-05th Jan 1942
Francis Louisa Walker, 31st July1891 (Portskewett, Wales) - 1957 (Billingham, Teesside)

Francis Walkers Parents were;
Charles Walker, 1855? ish
Fanny Jones, 1855? ish

Thats all I have on that side of the family.

Regards

Gavin

I have checked and indded the registration in 1915 with the maiden name of Horne is indeed my grandfathers. There is an old phoot with the name Horne on the rear which is the only information my mum had relating to my grandfathers mum.

Now I need to find the Horne line too......

Thank you.

Patchem, thanks but thats not the one.

Ivy, superb, thats them... I have managed to find the history for the Hornes going back to mid 1600's through a 3rd cousin i never knew until tonight.

Still trying to find the Whites, but this is going very well thank you so much.

Slightly confused by the information relating to Charlies birth place, it says Willington in the main text, then in the houshold text it says Islington... any ideas?

Ivy Report 29 Dec 2011 23:01

Ah yes, the image for the 1911 census is crossed out and rewritten; my guess was London Islington, and I hadn't spotted that the Ancestry transcriber had put Willington.

The baptism record is transcribed as:

Charles William White
19 Dec 1905
George Henry White
Violette Harriet White
Dartmouth Park Hill St Peter
Islington

Ivy

Thank you very very much.
Now on the hunt for Georges history.... now you have led me to Sheffield as his place of birth. I know it was 27/04/1873 and he was a self employed boot maker.

This is so addictive.
Thanks again

Gavin

Yes, it is addictive... I'd better stop chasing off on a wild goose chase - just to round off this particular hare, however, there is an entry in 1871 for a John White, married, b Sheffield approx 1845, but away from home in Leeds on the night of the census; the marriage certificate for George Henry says that George Henry's father is deceased by 1895; if John had died before 1881, Thomas may have taken George Henry under his wing?

Gavin Report 30 Dec 2011 00:01

Good grief Ivy, how on earth do you uncover all of this??
Indeed these are my family members, I know as they were boot and shoe makers....
Can you find the maiden names of Anne (Isle of Man) or Harriet (Sheffield) before they became whites? Marriage certs etc??
I wish I had your skill at this.

Many many thanks for your assistance. You have clarified that I had a link wrong in my tree...... just wish I knew how to correct it? The change parents button is greyed out and if I delete I will lose all the connections :-(

Thanks anyway
