thanks for the help guys and the telling off Reggie! point taken but don't know how the 'marked as answered' tick came to be.. He gave his age as 24 on his marriage certificate in 1875. All very helpful, will try baptisms.

Don't assume - until you have checked thoroughly - that the census info giving birth year as 1853 is NOT the person you are researching..........

He may have wished to appear older than his wife............

If his father wasn't named on the marriage cert, he was illegitimate.

What was his recorded age when he married?


Until 1875, there were no penalties for not registering births.......so his probably went unrecorded......all the more likely in view of the circumstances.

There are two parishes in Wiltshire with the name Bishopstone. One is in the north of the county, on the Wiltshire/Berkshire border, the other is in the south on the Wiltshire/Hampshire border.

Hi all again, back trying to make headway on this after enforced absence. I am still struggling to find birth and death records details of James Miles, born 1851 at Bishopstone. He appears in the 1911 census, living at Brook Cottages in Lyford near, Wantage, Berkshire. The help given above seems to indicate possibly another James Miles in Bishopstone, born in 1853. I'm confused!! Help please.

Hi all,
can anyone help me to find further details of James Miles, my Great Grandfather. He was born in 1851, but I am unable to find birth details. He married Elizabeth Gorton, (born 1852 in Uffington), the wedding taking place in September 1875 at Bishopstone, Wilts. Unfortunately, there are no details of his father on the wedding certificate. At the time of his marriage, he was a Farm Labourer in Bishopstone. There are census records subsequent to his marriage, but I have reached a bit of an impasse with regard to his birth. Any help will be gratefully received.
