Hardington Mandeville, Somerset parish records

Hello All,
I have hit a brick wall with a branch of my ancestors. I haven't had any luck via the usual websites so I am hoping that someone out there has access to the Parish records of Hardington Mandeville in Somerset please.
I am looking for the birth/christening for a Sarah Churchill born about 1752 in Hardington.
I have found other christenings for Sarah around that time in Crewkerne, Winterbourne Whitchurch, Westbourne and Gosport but following up their marriages and deaths eliminates them as possibilities.
Hardington doesn't have an OPC for me to contact either so if there is anyone who has access to these records I would really appreciate it if you could follow up on Sarah and her parents.
Thanks in advance
Cheers Barbara :-)

There are some OPC's for Somerset and here are all the Sarah's listed. There was one Churchill for Hardington Mandeville but it was a William in 1839, so definitely not the right person ;-)

CHURCHILL Sarah William Sarah St. Andrew, Wiveliscombe 05 Oct 1834
CHURCHILL Sarah Joseph Hannah St Bartholomew, Crewkerne 29 Dec 1822
CHURCHILL Sarah John St Bartholomew, Crewkerne 07 Mar 1762
CHURCHILL Sarah Sansem St Bartholomew, Crewkerne 06 Oct 1756
CHURCHILL Sarah Sampson St Bartholomew, Crewkerne 05 Jul 1755
CHURCHILL Sarah Thomas Martha The Blessed Virgin Mary, East Chinnock 27 Aug 1797
CHURCHILL Sarah William CHURCHILL Mary CHURCHILL St Michael & All Angels, Somerton 28 Jan 1703
CHURCHILL Sarah William CHURCHILL Ann CHURCHILL St Michael & All Angels, Somerton 28 May 1767
CHURCHILL Sarah Ann John Susan St Bartholomew, Crewkerne 17 Feb 1852
CHURCHILL Sarah Wheadon David St Bartholomew, Crewkerne 16 Aug 1789

The dates are baptism dates not birth, as you probably know. What else do you know about Sarah? I have several family members that were not baptised for some years after birth!

Have found these baptisms

ecord Type Baptism Date Surname Forename County Place Name Found As
1 Baptisms 28 Apr 1754 CHURCHILL John Somerset Hardington Mandeville Father Surname
2 Baptisms 10 Apr 1757 CHURCHILL Betty Somerset Hardington Mandeville Father Surname

6 Baptisms 20 Oct 1765 CHURCHILL Ann Somerset Hardington Mandeville Father Surname
7 Baptisms 19 Apr 1768 CHURCHILL Stephen Somerset Hardington Mandeville Father Surname

As you will see there is a baptism for Sarah Churchill in 1765 and as you are most probably aware baptisms could take place years after the birth...so a possibility?

Parents for all the children are Isaac & Elizabeth....possible marriage?

Thank you Lesley and Londonbelle! :-)
Yes Lesley, that is the same Sarah & Richard in my tree.
As I said before, I am not sure that her parents are Samson Churchill & Betty Balum as I believe their daughter Sarah married John FIELD in 1782 at Crewkerne so hence my interest in finding a birth at Hardington Mandeville.
The Sarah christened 1762 at Hardington is the daughter of John & Hannah HOLT and they never married until 1754 and I am fully aware though that births did happen before marriages and baptisms were often done when a child was older. Often a do 2, get one free deal seemed to happen.

Issac Churchill married Elizabeth Miller/Milllar in 1751 Hardington so their daughter is a big possibility. Thanks for that. I will follow that up a bit more.

I am interested too in the births of children to Isaac Churchill & Sarah ACKERMAN who married in 1743 at Hardington. I can't find any on the sites I can access though.

I followed the descendants of Samson & Betty Churchill the best I could through census records and the Christian names Samson, Job and Sarah appear often.
Following down through my Sarah's line the Christian names Isaac, Richard, Job & Sarah feature so at this stage I am leaning towards her father being one of the Isaacs from Hardington. Flimsy, I know, but I need to start somewhere.
Thanks again for taking the time to help, it is very much appreciated.
Sorry for the delay in responding, but I forgot to mention I am in Australia so I was catching up on my beauty sleep. ;-)
Cheers, Barbra :-)

Sorry,
I posted a reply to Vanessa last night before I went to bed but somehow, it has gone into Cyberspace or more likely I did something wrong.
It was quite lengthy as well, with lots of detail so I will recap.
The general consensus for many years was that Sampson Churchill & Betty Balum were her parents and I think that is just because that Sarah was the best option available at the time with the information available on the internet.
They had 2 Sarahs, the first died in 1755 and the 2nd, born 1756, I believe maried John Field and died 1806 in Langport. Their marriage record states that John's parish was Langport so that explains why she lived there and eventually died there.
On Sarah & Richard Eastment marriage the record states that they are borh of Hardington and they married at East Chinnock. :-( :-(

Barbara, try the following site

www.freereg.org.uk

that's where I got my data from.

It doesn't cover all counties but when it does there can be some little gems to be found!

I followed up on Sarah, daughter of Isaac & Elizabeth bap 20 Oct 1765.
She died /buried on 25 oct 1765 so I can now eliminate her as a possibility.
Thanks for the Link, Londonbelle, it has been very useful! :-)

So still trying to find children for Isaac CHURCHILL & Sarah ACKERMAN???

Any other suggestions please? :-D

I just found 2 children for Isaac & Sarah.
Isaac 1749 and he died 1768
Hester 1759 and she married Edward Genge in 1780 at East Chinnock.
Oddly, my Sarah also married at East Chinnock so am starting to think that my Sarah is the daughter of Isaac & Sarah and perhaps was never baptised???

Hi Barbara

I too am in Oz, as are a fair few members on GR :-D

How have you got back to Sarah Churchill? Who were her children/grandchildren - it might help to ascertain her parentage. What do you know for sure?

Barbara

Barbara Report 3 Jan 2012 09:39

Hi Vanessa,
My great grandmother was Ann Churchill born 1842 at Hardington Mandeville, Somerset.
She married William Langdon in Jan 1866 at Yeovil Somerset and he was born 1846 at West Chinnock Somerset.
They arrived in Australia in April 1866 and had 10 children, 9 of which were born in the Goulburn region.

Ann's parents were William CHURCHILL born 1816 at East Chinnock and Mary EASTMENT born 1812 at Hardington Mandeville, Somerset.

Mary Eastment's parents were Richard EASTMENT & Elizabeth LARCOMBE.
Richard was born 1783 at Hardington Mandeville and Elizabeth was born 1785 at Mosterton, Dorset. and they married 1799 at Mosterton Dorset.

Richard Eastment (1783) parents were Richard Eastment & Sarah CHURCHILL and they married 26 Dec 1777 at East Chinnock and marriage record stated they were both from Hardington and here begins my uncertainity.

The above is all known for certain, no doubts with any of that.
Fromthis point back is the unknown.
Richard Eastment snr died May 1823 at Hardington Mandeville and his age was given as 70 making him born c1753, but I am unable to find a birth for him anywhere.

Sarah Eastment (nee Churchill) died 1833 at Hardington Mandeville and her age was given as 81 making her born c 1752 and I am unable to find a birth for her anywhere that matches that date.

I think that this is simply because all of Hardington Mandevilles records haven't been transcribed yet.

The general consensus for many years was that she was the daughter of Samson CHURCHILL & Betty BALUM from Crewkerne, Somerset.
They had 2 Sarah's, one born & died in 1755 and the 2nd born 1756 and I believe that she married John Field in 1780 at Crewkerne and not Richard Eastment.
Their marriage record states that he was from Langport and she from Crewkerne, the same parish she was born in. They both died in Langport and her death record when she died in 1806 gave her age as 49 making her born c1757 which matches the 2nd Sarah of Samson & Betty at Crewkerne.
On IGI there is a record for John Field marrying Sarah Churchill, daughter of John & Hannah. This Sarah was baptised in 1762 so 5 years younger and the age doesn't match the death record. But, I cannot find a marriage or death for this Sarah to eliminate her as possibly marrying John Field.
From what I can determine John Churchill & Samson Churchill were brothers so the 2 Sarah's were 1st cousins.

Now, I could be totally wrong about all this and my Sarah is the daughter of Samson & Betty but I need to at least try and follow it all up to know one way or the other.

Any suggestions welcome as an unrelated person may see something that I am missing or misinterpreting.

Help!!! :-(

Cheers, Barbara ;-)

I give up for now!

I will need to look at the actual records for Hardington Mandeville and see if there is a Sarah born there around 1752. I cannot find anything already transcribed on websites.
Thanks to everyone that helped me,
Barbara ;-)

Been a while, but I just wanted to update you with my findings.
Freereg now has the baptism of the Sarah CHURCHILL that I was looking for, parents Isaac & Sarah and born 1752 and baptised 21 Oct 1752 at East Chinnock.
Just goes to show that patience IS a virtue.
