Looking to trace both parents of my maternal grandmother.
Lived in Newton Bewley, Billingham, Cleveland, was born in Middlesbrough.

She was married to Stanley James Shepherd, they had 4 children;
Sandra Shepherd
Jean Shepherd
Valerie Shepherd
Alan Shepherd

I believe Rose's history to be;
Father - William McKie 1896 - 1950
Mother - Evelyn Glover 1895 - 1924 (any history for her line would be appreciated)

I believe William McKie's history to be;
Father - John Mulcahy 02/03/1868 - 05/02/1900
Mother - Rose Bonner 24/02/1866 - 10/09/1907 (any history would be appreciated)

I believe John Mulchay's history to be;
Father - Laurence Mulcahy 1836? Ireland?
Mother - Margaret Herron 1843? Ireland?
History on either would be appreciated.

I am told the name changed from Mulcahy to McKie following the move from Ireland to Middlesbrough, when the accent could not be understood so they changed to spell it similar to its sound.....?

Any history for Rose and her ancestors would be appreciated.

Thank you

Gavin

You need to start doing some fact-based research, Gavin.

Get the marriage cert as a first step.

There is no point trying to folllow what you 'believe' to be the line.............

Kucinta Report 2 Jan 2012 22:27

You seem to have some sort of 'family history' already.

As Flick says, the only way to verify it is to check certificates and then census material, and eventually parish records etc.

You have previously been directed to freeBMD in another thread.

EDIT: Looks like our last posts crossed :-)

According to an Ancestry tree Rose Bonner's parents were
Bernard Bonner born 1821 Leitrim Ireland and

Mary Carrol born abt 1825 Monagan Ireland

Gavin

Gavin Report 2 Jan 2012 22:30

ah yes, have tried this before, cant seem to get actual cert info... only lists of names with book references.... is that correct or am i doing it wrong?

jax

jax Report 2 Jan 2012 22:34

You cannot get the cert info online you need to purchase the certs from GRO for £9.25 each

Gavin

Gavin Report 2 Jan 2012 22:35

Bazz, thats great... thank you.
is Carroll the surname or middle name of Mary from the information you are looking at....?

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 2 Jan 2012 22:35

This could be Evelyn's birth (but the name is spelt differently):-

Name: GLOVER, Eveline
Registration District: Middlesbrough
County: Yorkshire
Year of Registration: 1895
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Mother's Maiden Name: Not available before 1911 Q3
Volume No: 9D
Page No: 532

If you buy Evelyn's marriage certificate (reference given earlier by Kucinta) it should name her father. I can't find Evelyn on the 1901 or 1911 census.

Also this person has over 28.000 in their tree so you cannot be sure how accurate it is

Bazz

Bazz Report 2 Jan 2012 22:59

Carrol is Mary's surname and there is no record of her parents or the parents of Bernard on the tree

Kath / Bazz / Jax

Thank you all very much

jax

jax Report 2 Jan 2012 23:27

Those parents details for Rose Bonner could be correct but after looking at that persons tree I would take it with a pinch of salt, unless you can get some sort of verification

Gavin

Gavin Report 2 Jan 2012 23:38

ah, ok

do you know who's tree it was... could they be a family link to me... or was it general research?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 2 Jan 2012 23:48

Gavin, if you don't have an Ancestry subscription then you can search and view public Ancestry trees on Mundia, an Ancestry spin-off.
http://www.mundia.com/gb/

On there you can search and view trees and make contact with owners - very useful. However, a lot of Ancestry users (but not all) are like sheep and just copy stuff willy-nilly from each other's trees and suggested matches without doing any verification.

If you just want to collect names and have the biggest tree, well fine. But, if you want accuracy and pride in your OWN research then you have to do some verification. Buy your certificates from GRO (as you've now been advised many times) a lot of other places are rip-offs. http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
