We would be extremely grateful for any help/guidance/advice about a Janet Alexander Whyman born in Edinburgh, Scotland 1920. We know that her parents were Charles Whyman (1896-1953) and Janet Keith (1897-1977) and that she had a brother Charles Whyman, born 1921. We also know that Janet Alexander Whyman married William Quinn in 1940 and had a daughter Fay Whyman Quinn in January 1941. William Quinn went on to marry Agnes Marshall in 1945. We have been unable to find any marriage or death records for Janet Alexander Whyman and no further birth records that would indicate she had any other children. We have searched passenger lists, death, marriage and birth records in Scotland and England without success. We're not sure how to progress this now? Can anyone help please?

What was William's status when he re-married?

Hi Reggie,

Thank you for replying. He was divorced.

unfortunately the records are most likely on Scotlands People which isn't a subs site ,as I expect you know.

Maybe she reverted to her maiden name after divorce . did her daughter stay with her? you may track some records through the daughters marriage etc

I don't have any knowledge of Scottish Law, but that seems very quick for a divorce in those days.

Have you searched using the lady's married surname? You refer to her only by her maiden name in your post

Hi Shirley,

Thank you for replying. We have searched all birth, marriage and death records in Scotland in both names, Whyman and Quinn and have had no success. Her daughter Fay has no recollection of her at all - she remained with her father and wasn't given any information about her mother.

Thank you for your help.

Yes Shirley, Fay's first husband was called Michael Quinn.

Apologies Shirley, I meant Michael Redmond.

As she was divorced she may well have moved out of the area to Glasgow

Hi Reggie,

We have managed to find the record of William Quinn's marriage to Agnes Marshall in 1945, 5 years after William married Janet Alexander Whyman. Yes, we have searched the records in both surnames. It's a real mystery!

I only had a few credits to view the transcripts BUT for those years you have to order the certs anyway

Hi Shirley,

Would it be usual for her first married name to be recorded as "other name" on her death certificate when she died as her maiden surname was Whyman?

depends whether the informant knew her maiden name was Wyman. That Janet was 67 when she died so born c1921 which ties with a c1920 birth depending when her birthday was in the year .

I really think that's her

I would get the marriage cert to see if its her.

Shirley,

Thank you for your help. Yes, we will definitely progress that - I did see a record of that death while I was searching, but felt that because her maiden name wasn't mentioned that it couldn'd have been the lady we are looking for. I'm no expert though!

Thank you Shirley, we really would like to know one way or another :-)

I have looked at our records again and there is a birth for a Janet Alexander Quinn born 1921 in Glasgow who married a James Reidford in 1947 - it's not the Janet we're looking for as she was born in Edinburgh.
