This does not sound like a good idea. Just my opinion!

So people get to ask for free to pick our brains and records we pay for ?

Astra Report 21 Feb 2012 17:39

It's great that Gene's have acknowledged what we do and are prepared to advertise it.
It can only help to encourage people to use these boards which for all of us who "work" them can only be a good thing considering how dead they have been lately.

So that GR can show off the amazing volunteer helpers!

All of us help when we are able. Just not certain I want to be part of the dog and pony show. And will we know???

LOL!

Sorry-Astra-just laughing at your "dead" comment.

Maureen :-)

I respect and understand your view Maureen but these boards have been desolate for the last few months. Anything which helps to improve them can only be for the good.
I appreciate that they are using those who pay for nothing other than to help but surely any improvement in usage is good for us and GR alike.

LOL. Well you must admit they haven't been like they used to be before the changes.

:-D True,Astra. It just seems a little "off" to me.

Heaven forbid one of us goes way wrong on an answer or worse.

Best,

It wouldn't hurt GR to show their appreciation of their 'amazing volunteer members', that is those who regularly help other members in their research, by giving them free membership. They are now acknowledging it and are keen to show how valuable the board are. We all know who the regulars are and I'm one of the lucky ones to have benefitted.

Lol, would love to be a 'fly on the wall' there!

"We will then be encouraging them to log in on their home computers to see the replies they have received"

Hmm...do hope those servers are able to cope, would hate for them to see the dreaded 'Error Message'!.

Chris :)
(complete with GR freebie pencil from last year!)

ROFL!

The entire scheme seems to scream "danger".

You're able to attend again this year,Chris? I know you got some free credits for DecOL one year.

And thanks,Chrissie!

Lol Maureen, unable to go this time, and you are spot on!, that very nice man at Dec Ol, so kind he was with those credits, very useful too, perhaps next year!...

Chris :)

Good Luck to all going, have had some GR members 'mini' meets there, the last couple of years.

Are they going to cherry pick the threads to show to potential new members.

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 21 Feb 2012 19:56

Well.... to me it sounds like all the requests are going to be on that one thread? If that's the case it's gonna end up a dogs dinner of confusion... and clearly not been thought through?

....or are they going to open up a special board just for the day and then integrate them into the main boards later?

I mean they are being more than a little cheeky... i can see those members whom are NOT long term served here budging in on the action and getting it wrong??

We'll have to see how the weekend pans out... i wonder if we'll get more credits we can't spend? I still have all 30 of mine left!

Can't wait to see what would happen if one of the volunteers mentioned in the reply that they'd found the info on Anc*** or FMP!!

WhiffingSiggs

WhiffingSiggs Report 21 Feb 2012 20:07

Can one only access these boards if they are a paid up member ?

I think I've being paying for membership for several years without realising what I could (potentially) use it for..

 Lindsey*

Lindsey* Report 21 Feb 2012 21:22

Most other sites offer 1 month free trial, at least giving a chance to see what it offers., so if GR want to promote new members that is the way to go, not a handful of visitors to a show ?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 21 Feb 2012 22:54

and what happens when a helper asks for further information????

.............. we'll be waiting for ever for the replies!!

Kevin .....................

Any FREE member can read the postings on all the Boards.

Even a non-member stumbling across a reference on google can read everything.

They can NOT reply on the Boards, nor post threads asking for help ............. so even non-members can see what help is given

I assume that GR must be setting up a special "freebie" for visitors to their Booth. They do say that "only one laptop" will be used for this

BTW ........... the ease with which these Boards can be read is the major reason why helpers try to re-inforce the guidelines that no personal information on living people be posted on here ...... including email addresses.

I DREAD the thought of what is going to happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 21 Feb 2012 23:58

well....i've been thinking about this.... and i wonder if they are offering a one off cheapy membership fee??

You sign up for the year at the show and they are probably hoping that in the short space of time from when you sign up and post a question, to the time you get home, they'll be bitten by the bug.

Soooooo, when these people get home, they'll log in, get all excited about their replies and hopefully stay...

....but then there is the other side to this.... even if they don't get hooked, GR get to keep the year subs for no outlay.

I would wager 60% of the people who sign up on the day will lose interest after the first month.

These boards just are not what they used to be, and i think it's a bloody cheek GR are just assuming we'll follow along with this and play nice.

Wouldn't it have been more polite to have asked us weeks ago if we minded what they had got planned..... i mean if we were all on side then this task will be soooo much easier.

Just my 10 penneth worth.... and also while i'm at it... how long before this gets woooshed??
