Island Report 23 Feb 2012 18:24

I don't understand why this has thrown some into a tizz :-S

If you want to take part

Just respond as per.

When the poster doesn't react

Just resond as per.

Simple :-)

I don't think so Tracey. I think all of the queries will come onto the present boards under the WDYTYA sign in instead of a name.
I too was wondering how they would locate their answers when they get home and sign in on their own computer without having to search through the complete days postings for them.
Maybe it's just me being dense.

I think it may turn into a bit of a scramble with every record posted 2 or 3 times by the various researchers keen to get a look in and making it very difficult for the uninitiated to understand.

Although I am keen to take part I think it may turn into too much of a scramble for me so I may just watch from a distance unless it is quieter than I anticipate but I very much doubt that it will be.

it's still the line....

"we are only demonstrating this service on one laptop using one login"

One login? so how will the people who pose questions and then get answers, manage their answers (delete, mark answered, future queries)

How will GR stop the mess that is going to ensue having all these requests on one thread? some requests will surely get lost in the melé that will ensue when answering questions.

We'll be seeing a mix of questions surrounded by answers, it'll lose it's flow very quickly and be impossible to keep update with answers.

Does GR mean they will be creating a new BOARD for the weekend?

It will be amusing, I think, to see what happens

Genes Advisor Report 23 Feb 2012 11:56

Hi guys,

Just popped in again ahead of the show tomorrow to see how people are feeling about this idea. I'm very pleased to see some positive comments and will take all comments on board for future event planning where we plan to demo the boards.

I understand that everyone's weekends are precious, so thanks in advance to anyone who is planning on spending time on the boards answering questions. I hope that it will demonstrate to potential new members, and maybe even people who are already members but were unaware of the boards, what an amazing resource they can be.

As I have previously said, we are only demonstrating this service on one laptop using one login, so this really is a test of how well the idea works. I look forward to reading your feedback before and after the event and if you have any suggestions of other ways we can promote the message boards to encourage new members to participate in conversations, please post on the suggestions board or email [email protected] and title your email Suggestions For Board Promotion. This way I can personally pick them up.

Thanks

Katie

For some reason, I had to log on this morning...not that it bothered me.

However, it did give me the opportunity to read the home page before logging on. They are offering a 14 day free trial, which presumably means that anyone who posts at the Show will be able to register, log on and reply when they get home.

As the posts are going to be on a WDYTYA thread, at least anyone who tries to help will know that they are unlikley to get any feed back until later in the day.

I agree that 'helpers' shouldn't be singled out by GR and given advanced notice. Remember the fuss with the ill convieved 'Help Clinic'?

Chill, Folks. Chill :-D

Still ...................

I do have to thank GR for responding on here, and for the offer of a month's extension of membership to those who provide "useful help"

who would judge that???

although, it would have been nice to know WHO was replying on behalf of GR :-D

as my visits are almost always "out of GR's working hours" .................. I guess I'll be working even more in the dark than usual :-D :-D :-D :

Well i think they said all the posts will be in the WDYTYA name?

Sooooo, to be able to reply and 'own' your own post you'll ahve to register when you get home.

This then begs more questions?

1. who has control to delete that post, seeing as the actual poster won't have posted in their own name?

2. how does the poster mark it as read....or indeed have any control over it?

3. what happens to the emails that'll get sent to the WDYTYA username?? I mean over a period of time ....say 2 years when someone new comes along and see a post with a name they are researching.... that person will automatically pm the username. Who's going to monitor that name forever?

There could be untold data lost over the coming years from this situation?

So all threads will be posted under the board name WDYTYA live

So will everyone be given the log in detail to reply when they get home? or have to subscribe in their own name?

" i think non members can read posts but not write on them?)"

- yes, it is a public site.

jansmith

jansmith Report 22 Feb 2012 18:13

Just wonder if the only ones to reply "when they get home" will be the ones who become members (as i think non members can read posts but not write on them?)

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 22 Feb 2012 18:09

Jax,

Maybe i didn't really explain it very well, but gentle integration of an idea (and helpful opinions) is alot better than just having something landed on us.

Whilst i agree, the whole thing is voluntary, it doesn't harm to keep people posted on planned events.

Maybe not an email, maybe a thread ALOT earlier than the one posted, and most certainly one that doesn't make as many assumptions as the one we had??

It's fairly easy for them to work out who posts the most and when, it doesn't have to be regulars/high posters i suppose.... but just a sample straw poll of people's opinions.

I still stand by the statement, that most of their choices and idea's in the past haven'ty exactly got us all on side!!! :-D

I have to say Trace, that I do not agree that regular members ought to have been sent an email.

What is a regular member? I am on here at least 14 hours a day...every day, and would not expect to be treated any different from anyone else who uses their time to help on the boards.

It would end up being like the Help Clinic

WayneTracey Report 22 Feb 2012 17:32

I have to say thanks to GR for not only not whoosing this thread, and therefore actually allowing us to have an opinion that might go against the grain a little.... and secondly for actually taking the time to reply!

Island... we are not complaining as such, we are merely stating the issues we have with the assumption, that despite the fact we pay to be here (as Wisechild has pointed out), they have automatically assumed we want to help GR out with their PR stunt!!

I do think 1 month is a little stingy, but it is better than nothing. However i still have to say they could have planned this better, and despite that fact it's a big business, they still need us (the subs payers) to make it work!

GR, maybe next time a bit of preplanning and some well chosen emails sent to the regulars might have gone down a little better?? Lets face it, we can hardly have a board meeting about it, but including us in the planning and gleaning our ideas might have gone a long way :-) (has to be said, when you've been left to your own ideas alone before, they've hardly worked great for the masses :-D )

After all, we are in a catch 22 situation.... we wanna be here and help.... but without us being here you have nothing to offer!!

ElizabethK

ElizabethK Report 22 Feb 2012 14:49

Well.......the operative word is "voluntary" - no one HAS to answer queeries do they ?

Reading all this puts me off asking for help. :-(

wisechild

wisechild Report 22 Feb 2012 14:12

Would have been nice if we had been asked how we felt about the idea before just going ahead mob handed.
After all, we pay for the privilege of answering other people´s queries, however much pleasure we get from doing it.
The extention of membership by a month will certainly be more use that 30 credits, which have been sitting in my account for months.
