Thanks to Genes for the posting. We'll see how it goes,I guess.

What time will this all take place by the way?

3. As a gesture of thanks and appreciation for anyone helping answer these posts, we will be giving 1 months free membership to any member who responds in a helpful manner to threads posted under the board name WDYTYALive.

Might be worth it then but it depends on who makes the decision as to whether the member has responded in a helpful manner

I could be so very helpful for a box of chocs and some bubbly :-D

Hi guys,

Having read your replies and responses to our earlier post regarding this weekend we just wanted to answer a few of your questions.

1. The laptop being used for 'Find Ancestor' requests will be manned at all times by a member of the Genes Team and we will be advising and guiding people on the kind of things they post. This way you should not get questions that do not hold enough detail for you to answer.

2. Only 1 laptop will be available for requests on the day so we do not foresee any issues with overloading the site. We will start a new post for each request so that posts are easy to follow. All posts will be posted using the WDYTYALive board name.

3. As a gesture of thanks and appreciation for anyone helping answer these posts, we will extend your current membership by 1 month for any member who responds in a helpful manner to threads posted under the board name WDYTYALive.

4. There will be 8 other laptops available and all the records are free to view on the day, so it will be unlikely you will be asked to do basic look-ups. The posts are most likely to be calling on your expertise of the records and general family history knowledge.

I hope this answers your questions. If you have any specific questions or suggestions as to other ways we can showcase the boards in future please email [email protected]

Thanks

An ill-conceived 'bright' idea, dreamed up by someone who has no concept of how help is actually given on the boards.

If the plan is to use only one thread, the obvious answer is for the long-standing 'helper' members to totally ignore it.

Yes i see you point, someone posting at 10am on Saturday might not be able to return to their post til maybe 8pm.

They're gonna have an awful lot of posts whereby there is only 1 post by the OP then a whole lot of post using conjecture and guesswork because no-one has been back to answer questions.

Hmmmm, that's not exactly showing a fast flowing site is it?

It is a good idea, but If it is a post a request and go......No

Do GR not look at these boards and see the constant "which country" "wnen was he born" ect

I hope they give some guidelines on how to post before they are let loose

:-D :-D

wouldn't that just be the bees' knees!

MaureeninNY

MaureeninNY Report 22 Feb 2012 01:39

Well,I wish them luck.

I do hope they provide some further explanation/guidelines for us soon. (and hopefully they'll post it where we can all see it-not just on FB!).

I was thinking the exact same thing Sylv :-D

As it will be while the show is on 9-5 or whatever, you will have to get up early to help

Looking forward to see how this is going to work

SylviaInCanada Report 22 Feb 2012 01:24

oh, I'll probably be around, as I usually am ................ and will try to help if I can

but I'm just imagining all those "I'm looking for 'Joe Blow' " requests, that just have to have questions asked in return, such as when, where, relationship etc, .................. but we won't get any answers because the laptop will have been given to the next person in line

OH JOY!!

then we'll get all the conjectures trying to find "Joe Blow" without any evidence or proof, or even suggestion, that people are following the correct one

Fine showing for us, and for GR!

and .................. I thought earlier this afternoon ..................

is the GR server up to it???????

Just remembering the various chaotic times when the site has been opened up!

I'm working all day Saturday and gigging all saturday night. I'm recovering Sunday daytime and then leaving for a gig in London early evening.

If they'd of made a more polite approach towards myself/us i'd be inclined to 'pop' my head in and help out a bit.... and show my shiney side.

...but as they are using blind assumption, and complete ignorance towards our time served efforts here (not just now but for the last several years) I don't see why we should help?

It appears they understand we are the heart of the site, but strangely don't seem to want to reflect that in our subs or reflect it in our assistance done here.

I'm not saying we should 'boycot' this weekend....but i'm certainly legitimately busy!! ;-) :-D

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 22 Feb 2012 00:05

So do we all boycott the site while the WDYTA show is on ;-)

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 21 Feb 2012 23:58

well....i've been thinking about this.... and i wonder if they are offering a one off cheapy membership fee??

You sign up for the year at the show and they are probably hoping that in the short space of time from when you sign up and post a question, to the time you get home, they'll be bitten by the bug.

Soooooo, when these people get home, they'll log in, get all excited about their replies and hopefully stay...

....but then there is the other side to this.... even if they don't get hooked, GR get to keep the year subs for no outlay.

I would wager 60% of the people who sign up on the day will lose interest after the first month.

These boards just are not what they used to be, and i think it's a bloody cheek GR are just assuming we'll follow along with this and play nice.

Wouldn't it have been more polite to have asked us weeks ago if we minded what they had got planned..... i mean if we were all on side then this task will be soooo much easier.

Just my 10 penneth worth.... and also while i'm at it... how long before this gets woooshed??

SylviaInCanada Report 21 Feb 2012 22:54

and what happens when a helper asks for further information????

.............. we'll be waiting for ever for the replies!!

Kevin .....................

Any FREE member can read the postings on all the Boards.

Even a non-member stumbling across a reference on google can read everything.

They can NOT reply on the Boards, nor post threads asking for help ............. so even non-members can see what help is given

I assume that GR must be setting up a special "freebie" for visitors to their Booth. They do say that "only one laptop" will be used for this

BTW ........... the ease with which these Boards can be read is the major reason why helpers try to re-inforce the guidelines that no personal information on living people be posted on here ...... including email addresses.

I DREAD the thought of what is going to happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 Lindsey*

Lindsey* Report 21 Feb 2012 21:22

Most other sites offer 1 month free trial, at least giving a chance to see what it offers., so if GR want to promote new members that is the way to go, not a handful of visitors to a show ?

WhiffingSiggs

WhiffingSiggs Report 21 Feb 2012 20:07

Can one only access these boards if they are a paid up member ?

I think I've being paying for membership for several years without realising what I could (potentially) use it for..

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 21 Feb 2012 20:03

Can't wait to see what would happen if one of the volunteers mentioned in the reply that they'd found the info on Anc*** or FMP!!

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 21 Feb 2012 19:56

Well.... to me it sounds like all the requests are going to be on that one thread? If that's the case it's gonna end up a dogs dinner of confusion... and clearly not been thought through?

....or are they going to open up a special board just for the day and then integrate them into the main boards later?

I mean they are being more than a little cheeky... i can see those members whom are NOT long term served here budging in on the action and getting it wrong??

We'll have to see how the weekend pans out... i wonder if we'll get more credits we can't spend? I still have all 30 of mine left!
