I do know that the Daughters of Wisdom (translation of La Sagesse) owned the building that the school was in and had done so since about 1912 (there was a lot in the papers a couple years ago when they sold it - they got quite a slating, actually) but I dare say there could have been other orders taught there. I do recall the people who ran the school were outraged at the rents the Daughters of Wisdom were charging.

I'm still mystified by Kane's comment that he met a chap who went to the school where Sister Mary Laurence was. La Sagesse was most definitely an all girls school until 2007 when they allowed a few boys in (probably to boost their finances).

I'm now told that there was a Dominican boys prep school in the 1950s on the site of what was the Minories .....

I think thats what he may be saying...!!
One of my older sisters went to La Sagesse and she recalls they were the Sisters of Marie Reparatrice who taught her ...says she doesn't remember knowing them by " Sisters of La Sagesse"...

Kane, just to clarify - are you now saying that Sr Mary Laurence (Ellen Kelly) was the headmistress of La Sagesse? That she wasn't a Dominican nun and wasn't at the Minories School?

Kane - La Sagesse has only very recently been sold.

The chap you met couldn't have gone there as it was girls only.

I was baptised at St Dominics and I'm pretty sure there were no nuns associated.

I was a convent girl myself in the area and am struggling to think what school it could be .....

I think (but not 100% sure) that the building you're referring to is now the Leonard Cheshire home. My OH does think there may have been a boys school there about 50 to 60 years ago.

Will have another search around....As far as I am aware the Dominican Sisters weren't attached to St Dominics Church as such..........St Dominics (for ref) is just over Byker Bridge going into Ncle.
Were did you find "Minories School" situated before it was sold....?

Kane.....
You are asking about Sister Mary Lawrence (Dominicans)..Minories School Jesmond....

I am not aware of a "Minories School" Jesmond...however there was Nazareth House Sandyford Rd (area known locally as the Minories)..but that was run by the Sisters of Nazareth and was a Childrens Home.....

I must admit that this is the only birth I can see for the children's births pre 1861. I wonder if the others were registered.
