Driscoll Report 12 Apr 2012 07:52

I have been informed her father was John b abt 1832 Cork after researching William D born 1841. So, I have a John Driscoll married to a Catherine and living in Princes St in Rotherhithe, and they have an Ann. But I am not sure that this is the right family. She may have been a McArthy.
Annie can be found in Maynard St in 1901 Living with William Hollingsworth and listed as Housekeeper, however she has a number of children by him before 1911 and they do not marry (as he was previously married).
Can anyone help me to find exactly which family she belonged to? There would seem to be more than one John Driscoll, and I am unsure the name of his wife.

Noting that she was known as Annie in 1911 I wonder whether this might have been her in 1871?

Well, I have done a quick tree with this family....but.....the sticking point is that in all of the census's that I know are her, Rotherhithe, Surrey is listed as the place she was born.

The only Rotherhithe birth that would appear to fit is this one but the fathers name is William:

Births Jun 1866
DRISCOLL Hannah K St. Saviour 1d 23

Name: Hannah Kate Driscoll
Record Type: Baptism
Estimated Birth Date: abt 1866
Baptism Date: 20 May 1866

Parish or Poor Law Union: Southwark St Saviour

Rotherhithe registration district ceased to exist in 1870 and was incorporated into St Olave, Southwark.

At death Hannah or Ann or Annie appears to have been known as Anna:

Name: Anna Driscoll

Age at Death: 70

Everyone has found John married to Catherine with daughter Ann.

How do Hannah and William fit in?

Is Hannah, Ann's sister? If so, could it be Johanna or the Hannah Jonesey found?

Not seeing how William D fits in.

Driscoll Report 12 Apr 2012 10:48

Well....apparently she was just known as Annie, and the family don't seem to know too much. Her son Edward was my grandfather, and he only had two sons. My dad died when I was young and my uncle is unwell. I am also in Christchurch New Zealand, so missed out on any of the family talk. I have not met anyone other than immediate cousins. I did hear from my grandfathers cousin who said that her death cert recorded John as her father. But I have also been tracking the William and Catherine family as that is what my cousins thought Annie's father was named. I have sent away for a couple of certificates in the hope that it might lead me further.
I have also been tracking the John who's parents were Daniel and Ann and lived in St George in the East, and Shadwell area's. But it is hard to confirm John or William. I am stuck.

Driscoll

Driscoll Report 12 Apr 2012 10:51

Extra hard not knowing the area......google maps has been useful.
I am coming to London in June, but unfortunately only have a Friday and Archives is shut.
I am attending the O'Driscoll clan reunion in Baltimore, Cork and hoped to track where the family is from before I got there. I would just love to visit the place and maybe see a house, or graves....or church ....anything. I wonder about records for the dock labourers, or Parish records around Rotherhithe?

Driscoll

Driscoll Report 12 Apr 2012 10:56

Oh, just playing catch up on what people have offered. I think that Hannah, Johanna, Anne and Anna and even Jane, are used interchangeably by the Irish. It is possible she was Ann. I haven't seen the 1871 census with John and Catherine, with Thomas and Mary. I shall see what I can find with them. :-

Driscoll

Driscoll Report 12 Apr 2012 11:10

Question....in the 1901 census where there were 2 strikes next to her name....where else was she recorded as living? Is it possible to track that? If she was still with family members then it might identify her father? Maybe? Can census's record her twice?

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 12 Apr 2012 13:36

Hi Driscoll,

May I just question a statement that you made?

"I did hear from my grandfathers cousin who said that her death cert recorded John as her father."

English death certificates do not give the deceased's fathers details as they do in Australia for example. Where and when does the cousin you refer to believe that Ann. Annie, Hannah ect died? Have they still got the certificate?

Regarding your question about the 1901 census. Unfortunately I believe that the comment made by Gins about her not being in the Hollingsworth household is incorrect. She was recorded as being a visitor at 35 Trident St, Rotherhithe. The double strike passing through the line that has her name written on it merely indicates that she was the last person who was recorded as living at that particular address. Similar notations indicate the same individuals/situations at every other house in the street. In 1911 she is still in the Hollingsworth household but they are now living at 37 Maynard Road, Rotherhithe. On both census returns her occupation is given as Housekeeper which was a well known euphemism often used where a man and woman were living as a couple but were not married to one another.

Vera2010 Report 12 Apr 2012 16:16

This could be the McCarthy marriage you refer to. Father of John is Daniel a Farmer. Father of Catherine is James a Cook General. Witnesses John and May or Mary Driscoll. They are said to be full age so not sure that would fit with Hannah (Anna)'s dob of 1867.

Yeah, I suspect they were too young. I have that record too. I couldn't find that 1871 census result further up. I am a novice....not sure if you can search through the Hanover St address? It is not coming up on my ancestry searches. Can anyone give me a link I can get to via ancestry records?

Back to wedding. Surely they must have been married in Ireland as Thomas, Mary, James.....and Ann...well, not sure now.....are all born there.
Can anyone see them in Ireland? I do want to track their home place, other than just Cork.
AND...if they had all these children born in Ireland, that would rule out the George In the East, and Shadwell, wouldn't it?

Driscoll Report 14 Apr 2012 01:37

Confirmed that John is father, Catherine is mother. Confirmed the 1871 census is correct for family. Would seem that there is both a Johanna and Anne Driscoll in the family. I guess my G Grandmother is the 1867 Anne. Have been contacted by Catherine (Kate)'s ancestor who says she married Mark Henley in March 1885, St Olaves, Rotherhithe and father on cert is John, and a Johanna (Sibling) signed as witness.

Thank you all. This is a major break through.
I have been able to locate a family with the above 1871 births in Castlehaven and Myross, with the homeland or farm listed as Rinneen. Only Thomas is missing, and the parents wedding. I shall start another link to see what can be found of them. :-D
