Jane Report 24 Oct 2012 19:19

Thanks MarieCeleste I remember this information that you give me but since then I have been given information on 1884 Naturalization - Joseph Ferry born
in England and he was naturalized on the 4th October 1884. The person who
sponsored him was of Union Township, Alleghany County, PA, and Union
Township is now Green Tree Borough, Southwest of Pittsburgh. I cannot be
certain this is my Joseph but he was a miner when he lived in England, and
I think the area of Pittsburgh is a mining area. I don't have the facility on my
Ancestry membership and I just hoped someone could be really kind and lookup
American Census for Pittsburgh to see if a Joseph Ferry had married and had
a family. But thanks for all the he;p you have given me.
Kind regards
Jane.

Jane - I posted this much earlier in your thread but there's no guarantee that it's your Joseph:

Baltimore, Passenger Lists, 1820-1948 and 1954-1957
Name: Joseph Ferry
Arrival Date: 15 Sep 1881
Age: 19
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1862
Gender: Male
Race: English
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Ship Name: Hebernian
Port of Arrival: Baltimore, Maryland

He was a labourer and was heading to Oskalooga, Iowa.

It only gives England as the birthplace, nothing more specific.

I searched extensively the last time this was posted but could sadly not find any definite trace of him after this arrival.

Jane Report 23 Oct 2012 19:58

I am looking for more information on Joseph Ferry 1862 born in Fatfield,
County Durham, father Joseph Ferry, mother Isabella Ferry nee Ledger.
I have found that Joseph left for America on the " Hebernia" from Liverpool
and arriving in Baltimore, Maryland on the 15th September. I have info that
it could be in 1884- Naturalization and he had links to Union Township.
Alleghany County, PA. I was hoping maybe someone could be kind enough
to look -up any information to see if Joseph ever married in PA and had
a family. I hope I have followed the correct thread.
thanks
Kind regards
Jane.

Jane Report 21 Sep 2012 10:31

Hi,
Sorry I have just read what you say but have been on holiday up in County Durham where I got a copy of the marriage certificate for John Marshall Blakelock
and Mary Jane Lumsdon on the 18th Feb 1871, Residence for both down as Sherburn Hill, Miner, father George Blakelock, Platelayer and brides father is
named as James Lumsdon, Miner. so now I know for certain it is not my Jane.
While I was up in Durham looked at some info on girls named Jane Ferrey, Jane
Ferry and Jane Ledger born about 1851/52 there was some but odd differences
to the information I have which is nil really other then the 1861 Census where
Jane is down aged 9, other then that nothing really. I keep wondering if maybe she went out to Australia or America as Jane Ferry and married there as she
has relatives in both Countries. The only connection I can find with the Blakelocks
or Blacklocks is that my Great Grandmother who is either Jane Ferry's sister or
possible half sister is that when there parents died Joseph and Isabella Ferry my
G Grandmother Rebecca was only about 8 years old and the Blakelocks took her
in and gave her a home as maybe they were good neighbours or friends, but what happened to Jane I don't know I just hope one day I may findout, I think what
I hoped was that the Jane I saw with John Blakelock was her sister and had looked out for Rebecca and siblings George and Joseph when there mam and dad died, but there you go I was wrong. It does look as if Jane Ferry 1851/52 was
born before Joseph and Isabella married in 1854 but maybe to be old fashoned
they had been courting and it happened sooner then later. Thanks for all your help even my trip to Durham made me know wiser.
Kind regards
Jane.

Jane, I don't really follow - if Mary Jane Lumsden was Isabella's child then wouldn't she have been Mary Jane Ledger.

I'm hoping some fresh eyes might find something .....

Message for MarieCeleste from Jane.
Hello I took your advice and got a copy of John Laverick's and Hannah
Ferry's marriage certificate and one of the witnesses was a Jane Mar.
Blacklock, so it didn't help me with Jane Ferry 1851/52 Fatfield.
It looks like John M. Blacklock married a Mary Jane Lumsdon and I think
her dad may have been James Lumsdon but cannot find anything out
about him or her parents, so I am wondering if this was her dad but if
Mary Jane Lumsdon was born out of wedlock to Isabella Ledger before
she married Joseph Ferry, and then when they married Joseph took
Mary Jane as his daughter, droped the Mary and just called her Jane
Ferry. Do you think anyone can help me with information on the Lumsdon
family?
Thanks
Kind regards
Jane.

Jane Report 3 Sep 2012 16:21

Hi,
I am hoping someone could maybe help me with a lookup of a marriage
that I have very little information about. I found the piece of paper in an old
file from when I first started and its a marriage between Bernard Connolly
and Jane Ferry and the submitter was from Sydney, NSW. There is no other
information on it. Any help at all would be great.
Thanks
Jane.

More information if possible on Joseph Ferry born 1831 Pelton, I have a
crossing for him on the " Virginia " on the 31st May 1869 arriving in New
York he was with William Ledger later Bainbridge and John Foster.
I am wondering if someone could be kind enough to look up passenger lists
before the above crossing to see if Joseph is mentioned on any other ships
as my G Grandmother his daughter Rebecca Fletcher nee Ferry born 1866
in PA arrived before the crossing on the " Virginia " so Joseph must have done
the journey before.
Any help much appreciated
Jane.

Hi,
Never guess just had a message through from a friend in the North East
who said the name of the witness on the marriage lines for Hannah and John
was Jane Mar Blacklock and that's the way it was put, i take it the Mar is for Mary,
really disapointed but have to keep trying.

Jane Report 28 Aug 2012 17:08

Thanks MarieCeleste the words are nice what you put, makes me feel sad
people are put into or think they are in that position so they do something so
drastic, I read only from one article but will reay the others the only thing that
really puzzled me as Mary Laverick's daughter's death was put as natural
couses so found it confusing but what ever happened really sad. Hannah was
my g grandmother Rebecca Flecher nee Ferry's older sister and my dad lived
with his Gran when young and he said she was lovely, makes you wonder how
circumstances can make people behave so differently, but I think it would be
very hard for people like Hannah and John Laverick in Australia in those times.
Thanks so much for keep trying for Jane Ferry for me, she has to have lived
some where?
Many knid regards
Jane.

Hi Jane, as you say we can't judge what happened all those years ago - we don't know what the full circumstances were or what straits people were in.

We haven't yet got to the bottom of what happened to Jane, but we'll keep chipping away at it.

Jane - Eringobragh is quite right about how to look at those articles on Trove.

Just one thing, the pictures mentioned are actually in the document I attached to the personal message I sent you last night - if you're having problems with that let me know.

Anyhow, lunch break over - back to work!

When you go into the site put in Hannah's name then when the "page" turns over you need to click on "Digitalised Newspapers" on the toolbar across the top..up comes all the reports..!!
Never used the site before and had the same issue as you initially ..!!
If you still cant crack it then I can send you by PM the articles.

Eringobragh1916 Report 15 Aug 2012 08:58

Morning Jane...I'm becoming like you with trying to find "your Jane"..!!! Don't know how we missed the JMBlacklock and Mary J Lumsdon marriage first time around but it happens ..so now we go back to the drawing board and see what transpires.

I looked last night for a marriage of a Jane Ferry (variations) initially in NE and Durham (there were a few) then tried to xref those with the 1871 and 1881 Census but it was of no great value ...other than having to purchase lots of MCs.

I havent looked at the site MarieCeleste gave you ..(will have a look now) and get back to let you know how to follow it through..

Jane Report 15 Aug 2012 08:07

Hi,
I just really don't know what to say at the moment feel shocked about what I have
read. I don't know how to thank you both for doing this for me, my quest for Jane
Ferry was my real passion why I don't really know, just something wanted me to
do it. I have had a researcher from the area where me and Jane Ferry came from
and he said he had seen the information that John M Blacklock married Mary Jane Lumsdon and the children had her down as there mother, I think the reason
we all thought the Jane who was with John on the 1881 Census which showed
the 2 younger male siblings of my Jane Ferry living with the Jane and John
Blacklock ( George and Joseph Ferry ) because of this as there parents had died
so we thought oh it must be our Jane looking after them, and it goes to show it
was'nt. The researcher I had could not find any birth for Jane under the name
Ledger, Ferry and Ferrey but I don't know if when she was born in 1851/52 that
babies births had to be Registered but Jane was born before Joseph and Isabella Ferry nee Ledger married, the only proof I have seen for Jane with the
Ferry's is the 1861 Census and they are named as Ferrey. I will print off all the
information and really have a good read of it, and my thanks to you both for what
you have sent me, will have a look on the site you have given me to at the pic's.
Many kind regards
Jane.
